HomeMy WebLinkAboutTammy Neumann What does sustainability mean to you, and why do you believe it’s important? Sustainability means a better future for my grandchildren. While the word sustainability has become a buzz word, and I made some effort in my daily life by recycling etc., I don’t know that I realized how much more I could be do- ing to ensure a better future for them. How is sustainability incorporated into your position? I will refer to the Farmers Market to answer this question. Just by nature, a farmers market provides sustainability by way of its vendors. Many are aware that much of our food travels many miles before it reaches your plate. The food at the farmers market is transported short distances, and much of the food provided by the farmers are grown in ways to reduce the impact to the earth by using organic methods. The market provides a venue for farmers to sell their healthy, locally grown food direct to the consumer and also provides economic benefits to the Iowa City community What actions have you taken to improve sustainability within your position? In support of Iowa City’s sustainability initiative, the farmers market vendors will no longer offer single-use plastic bags beginning with our 2017 season. To help launch this new policy, the Farmers Market has purchased 1,500 cloth bags which will be given away at the first few markets while supplies last.   In your opinion, what efforts can be made to improve sustainability within our community? I will continue in the effort of drawing more customers to the Iowa City Farmers Market, thereby ensuring that the farmers can continue to make a living by growing food and providing healthy, fresh, local food to the community.
