Job Summary
Under general direc�on, performs general service, maintenance, and repairs of vehicles and
equipment in the City municipal fleet.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Performs welding, fabrica�on, component rebuilding and recondi�oning services on a
wide range of municipal equipment as assigned.
• Repairs and replaces electrical components such as alternators, distributors, control
modules, relays, lights, and switches.
• Uses specialized equipment to diagnose and repair electrical systems and computerized
engine controls.
• Inspects City municipal fleet and equipment for safety defects and road worthiness.
• Inspects mechanical func�ons including the driveline, suspension, steering, brakes,
lights, �res, hoses, and exhaust systems.
• Diagnoses mechanical problems, electrical components, hydraulic systems, HVAC
systems and cooling system components and determines the extent of necessary
repairs.
• Uses equipment such as boom truck and overhead crane to perform ac�vi�es such as
rigging, removal of old material and installa�on of new parts.
• Repairs and adjusts engines (both gas and diesel), transmissions, differen�als, clutches,
and hydraulic systems.
• Raises vehicles using hydraulic jack or hoists to remove or replace components such as
engines, transmissions, or differen�als.
• Tunes up engines, replaces and fits parts including carburetors, fuel injec�on systems,
fuel pumps, strainers, fuel lines, fuel tanks and gauges.
• Replaces brake system components such as master cylinders, boosters, brake linings,
drums, and rotors.
• Replaces, fits, and adjusts cooling system components such as radiators, water pumps
and hoses.

• Performs repairs and preventa�ve maintenance on a wide variety of the City's light and
heavy fleet equipment.
• Responds to service calls and performs repair work in the field.
• Furnishes personal hand tools for use in performing job du�es.
• Prepares new vehicles and equipment for service, shutles vehicles, and removes older
ones from the fleet for disposal.
• Responds to on-call emergencies during winter months.
• Cleans work area and shop; offices, equipment, cleans and maintains interior and
exterior of City pool vehicles.
• Reports �me and material costs on computerized work order system.
• Posts applicable parts to work order and keeps detailed work order notes and status up
to date.
• Works with other City divisions to provide professional and courteous internal customer
service.
• Performs Mechanic III du�es in their absence.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other du�es as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience. Degree in Automo�ve/Diesel Mechanics. Experience in
auto/diesel mechanics, fleet maintenance, or related.
• Forklift certification required within 60 days of hire. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid
State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on.
Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement
within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-
employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background
check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Hydraulic system training. Air condi�oning refrigerant handling cer�fica�on.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in
writen, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situa�ons.
• Ability to diagnose and repair air brake system components.
• Ability to diagnose engine malfunc�ons and perform necessary repairs.

• Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and measurement of equipment
tolerances.
• Ability to prepare writen and computer-generated repair orders.
• Ability to read and interpret service manuals, electrical and hydraulic diagrams and
technical informa�on, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and
procedure manuals.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on.
• Ability to write work reports.
• Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical
systems, computerized engine control and fuel systems.
• Knowledge of OSHA (Occupa�onal Safety and Health Administra�on) regula�ons.
• Knowledge of the opera�on of a wide variety of equipment used in a municipal fleet.
• Skill in computer use and typing skills.
• Skill in use of tools and repair equipment including engine, electrical and digital
diagnos�c equipment, precision measuring equipment.
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.
