Job Summary
Under immediate direc�on, performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance and care of the
urban forest in parks, along trails, in natural areas and other public facili�es and grounds within
the City.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Answers ques�ons and provides informa�on to the public.
• Assists with tree, shrub and perennial pruning, trimming, removing, chipping, plan�ng,
weeding and watering.
• Operates chainsaws, hand saws, hand pruners, pole pruners, trucks, chippers, aerial li�s,
backhoes, loaders and other specialized equipment.
• Assists in snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm
damage clean-up, and ice-ska�ng area maintenance.
• Performs minor mechanical repairs and small engine repairs.
• Maintains tools and equipment.
• Installs snow removal equipment on tractors and trucks.
• Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments.
• Assists other divisions, contractors and agencies as needed.
• Responds to storm or other emergencies, as needed.
• Performs du�es in a safe manner and par�cipates in safety training.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other du�es as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training;
or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in tree
maintenance, arboriculture and/or urban forestry.
• Must obtain forkli� and backhoe cer�fica�on within 12 months of hire. Sa�sfactory
driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon

first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake
endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements.
Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal
background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or
training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Pes�cide applicator’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved
writen or oral instruc�ons.
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized
situa�ons.
• Ability to follow oral and writen instruc�ons.
• Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and take measurements.
• Ability to proficiently use computers, tablets and digital devices.
• Ability to read and understand work orders, arboricultural best management prac�ces
and maintain writen and digital job records.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on.
• Skill in the opera�on of chainsaws, hand saws, hand pruners, pole pruners, trucks,
chippers, aerial li�s, backhoes, loaders and other specialized equipment.
• Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.
