HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWI - LandfillUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Maintenance Worker I – Landfill Department: Public Works Division: Resource Management Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Landfill FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 3 Job Number: 0302 Job Summary Under general supervision, maintains liter control at the Landfill, assists with dumping refuse roll-offs, mows grass, and performs rou�ne janitorial work. Monitors drop-off recycling areas at Landfill and at community drop-off sites. Performs general service and maintenance of landfill grounds, equipment and buildings. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Picks up liter at Landfill. • Dumps roll-offs, maintains area around trash and recycling bins. • Keeps recycling areas for oil, appliances and electronics cleaned up and organized. • Assists in keeping recycling bins at community drop-off sites clear of overflow, dumped items and liter. • Answers customer ques�ons regarding Landfill services. • Directs traffic at Landfill. • Waters landfill roads with water truck to control dust. • Performs grounds maintenance by mowing, weeding, and mulching landscaped areas. • Operates snowplow and blowers to remove snow in winter months. • Picks up supplies and parts for daily Landfill opera�ons. • Par�cipates in safety commitee and iden�fica�on of workplace hazards. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Experience in general labor. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to mul�ply and divide with 10's and 100's. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved writen or oral instruc�ons. • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to interface posi�vely with staff and customers. • Ability to learn and understand landfill rules and regula�ons and compos�ng procedures. • Ability to perform these opera�ons using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. • Ability to prepare writen work orders and job records. • Ability to read and comprehend maintenance and parts manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Knowledge of safety procedures. • Skill in opera�ng and maintaining trucks, equipment and machinery used in ground maintenance opera�ons. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
