Job Summary
Under general supervision performs work in the maintenance of municipal buildings, pools,
facili�es and grounds and performs other related work as required.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Performs backwashing on pool and splash pad filtra�on systems; assists in annual
maintenance of pool equipment, and vacuums pools.
• Monitors and corrects water chemistry as needed either manually or via adjus�ng
computerized controller system.
• Sweeps, mops, waxes, buffs, scrubs, and cleans floors, vacuums carpet areas; washes
windows and walls; cleans restrooms, emp�es and cleans waste receptacles; spot cleans
walls.
• Cleans fountains, polishes metal work; dusts, waxes, washes and polishes furniture and
woodwork.
• Maintains equipment and materials used in custodial work; replenishes supplies.
• Replaces light bulbs; unlocks doors and windows.
• Maintains surrounding walks and grounds; assists with snow removal work and grass
mowing.
• Moves furnishings and equipment as directed.
• Removes trash from yard and parking lot; pulls weeds from sidewalk area.
• Monitors and conducts minor repair to the digital hea�ng, ven�la�on and air
condi�oning, boiler, electrical, and plumbing and contacts outside contractors as
needed.
• Performs general carpentry, as needed.
• Maintains digital log of maintenance.
• Performs du�es in a safe manner and par�cipates in safety training.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other du�es as assigned.

Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training;
or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in janitorial or
building maintenance.
• Cer�fied Pool Operator Cer�fica�on within six months of hire. Automated external
defibrillator, cardiopulmonary resuscita�on, first aid cer�fied within six months of hire.
Valid State of Iowa driver's license with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of
age. Must pass a criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or
training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Plumbing experience
and certified pool operator experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to add, subtract, mul�ply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common frac�ons, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved
writen or oral instruc�ons.
• Ability to compute rate, ra�o, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized
situa�ons.
• Ability to establish and maintain effec�ve working rela�onships with building tenants
and general public.
• Ability to perform moderately heavy tasks.
• Ability to perform rou�ne custodial du�es.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance
instruc�ons, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to write rou�ne reports and correspondence.
• Knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures, the use and care of cleaning materials
and equipment and swimming ability.
• Knowledge of custodial materials and equipment.
• Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in a public building.
• Ability to work independently.
• Skill in the opera�on of various cleaning equipment including pool vacuums, floor
scrubbers and wet vacuums, transfer pumps, lawn mowers, and snow blower.
• Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Outlook
and Cartegraph).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving
mechanical parts, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic
chemicals, risk of electrical shock, vibration, confined space, and traffic hazards. The employee
is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen,
insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Involves
some exposure to stress due to the work environment and/or crisis situations.
