Job Summary
Under immediate direc�on, plants and maintains trees and landscape plan�ngs located in City’s
rights-of-way, parks and other public areas.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Answers ques�ons and provides informa�on to the public.
• Plants, transplants, trims, removes and maintains trees located in City rights-of-way,
parks and other public areas.
• Assists in the emergency removal and cleanup of storm damaged trees.
• Plants bare root trees in City’s nursery and maintains trees.
• Assists in maintaining appropriate records of daily work logs, public requests for tree
plan�ng and removal, stump removal, and inventories of previously planted trees.
• Operates and performs minor repair and cleans equipment, including chainsaws,
woodchipper, tree spade, bucket truck, rope and saddle, roto �ller and various hand
tools.
• Assists in purchasing for daily opera�ons.
• Performs snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm
damage clean-up, and ice-ska�ng area maintenance.
• Constructs safe work zones within the City right of ways.
• Operates trucks and heavy equipment.
• Assists other divisions, contractors and agencies as needed.
• Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments.
• Performs du�es in a safe manner and par�cipates in safety training.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other du�es as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training;
or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in urban forestry.

• Forkli� and backhoe cer�fica�on within proba�onary period. Sa�sfactory driving record.
Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in
posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake
endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements.
Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal
background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or
training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. GIS and tree inventory
experience.
• ISA Cer�fied Arborist or Cer�fied Municipal Arborist. ISA Cer�fied Tree Worker Aerial Li�
Specialist. ISA Cer�fied Tree Worker Climber Specialist. Pes�cide applicator’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to interact posi�vely with co-workers and other City department staffs.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
• Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons.
• Ability to read writen instruc�ons and maps, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance
instruc�ons, and procedure manuals, and prepare writen log sheets and records.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists.
• Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on.
• Ability to write rou�ne reports and correspondence.
• Knowledge of arboricultural techniques including heavy rigging for removal of trees and
dead or hazardous limbs.
• Knowledge of tree diseases.
• Knowledge of tree maintenance and tree iden�fica�on.
• Skill in opera�ng and maintaining variety of tools and equipment used in forestry and
landscaping.
• Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).

No supervision of direct reports.
