HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWII - HorticultureUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Maintenance Worker II – Hor�culture Department: Parks & Recrea�on Division: Parks & Forestry Supervisor: Superintendent of Parks & Forestry FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 5 Job Number: 0509 Job Summary Under general direc�on, performs a variety of tasks in the grounds maintenance of the Central Business District as well as areas in the City parks and City right-of-ways. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Answers ques�ons and provides informa�on to the public. • Performs landscape maintenance of plant materials in the Central Business District and adjacent areas including plan�ng, weeding, watering, mulching, raking, mowing, trimming, and pruning. • Performs snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm damage clean-up, and ice-ska�ng area maintenance. • Performs minor to moderate mechanical repairs on equipment and performs rou�ne maintenance on tools and equipment. • Assists and performs landscape du�es on flower beds, natural areas and specific loca�ons in various City parks and City right-of-ways as assigned. • Operates pickup trucks, skid steer loader with various atachments, tractors, mowers, string trimmers, snow blowers, roto-�llers and other specialized equipment. • Assists other divisions, contractors and agencies as needed. • Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments. • Responds to storm or other emergencies, as needed. • Performs du�es in a safe manner and par�cipates in safety training. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in grounds maintenance or facilities repair. Updated: March 2024 • Forkli� and backhoe cer�fica�on within proba�onary period. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to establish and maintain effec�ve working rela�onships with co-workers and the general public. • Ability to follow oral and writen instruc�ons, to read and understand work orders and to maintain writen job records. • Ability to perform as a lead worker and supervise, assign or delegate work to a support staff of seasonal employees. • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to responsibly perform assignments without immediate supervision. • Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on. • Ability to write rou�ne reports and correspondence. • Knowledge of general maintenance and repair of municipal grounds and facili�es including custodial materials and equipment, light construc�on, plumbing, electrical and carpentry techniques and equipment. • Knowledge of hor�cultural prac�ces including the care and maintenance of annuals, perennials, ground covers, trees and shrubs. • Knowledge of occupa�onal hazards and proper safety precau�ons. • Skill in the opera�on and rou�ne maintenance of various equipment including power vacuums, sweepers, scrubbers, lawn mowers, snow blowers, roto-�llers, cord trimmers, and a variety of power tools. • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook).
