Job Summary
Under immediate direc�on, operates solid waste and/or recycle or yard waste collec�on truck
on all collec�on routes to collect solid waste, yard waste and recyclables. Performs rou�ne
maintenance to vehicle.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Plans route, drives and operates collec�on truck on collec�on routes from pickup to
delivery at disposal site.
• Collects household solid waste, recyclables, yard waste, Christmas trees and wreaths on
routes and transports to disposal site.
• Ensures truck is opera�ng properly; performs rou�ne maintenance; cleans vehicle and
equipment; maintains all fluid levels.
• Performs daily vehicle walk-around for safety and vehicle maintenance check.
• Ensures that employees have proper personal protec�ve equipment.
• Documents and enforces collec�on rules with the public; solves public disputes over
rules and regula�ons.
• Delivers recycling supplies and yard waste supplies to businesses.
• Picks up dead animals.
• Picks up bulky items and drops them off at the landfill.
• Delivers bins and carts to homes and businesses.
• Maintains and cleans office, performs grounds maintenance at worksites.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other du�es as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school diploma or G.E.D. and one year of related experience or training; or
equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience driving a truck or
related.

• Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on
permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license
with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng
requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must
pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to add, subtract, mul�ply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common frac�ons, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in
writen, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to compute rate, ra�o, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situa�ons.
• Ability to follow verbal and writen orders.
• Ability to handle con�nuous li�ing.
• Ability to have high physical endurance.
• Ability to interface posi�vely with staff and customers.
• Ability to operate recycling and fully automated garbage trucks, including driving on the
opposite side and following special safety precau�ons.
• Ability to read and understand maps and street signs.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to write and complete daily �me sheets.
• Knowledge of routes.
• Knowledge of solid waste regula�ons.
• Knowledge of street loca�ons and general City geography.
• Skill in driving a truck.
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.
