HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWIII - ForestryUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Maintenance Worker III – Forestry Department: Parks & Recrea�on Division: Parks & Forestry Supervisor: Superintendent of Parks & Forestry FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 8 Job Number: 0805 Job Summary Under general direc�on, plants and maintains trees and landscape plan�ngs located in City's right of ways, parks and other public areas. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Answers ques�ons and provides informa�on to the public. • Plants, transplants, trims, removes and maintains trees and flower beds located in City right of ways, parks and other public areas. • Assists in the emergency removal and cleanup of storm damaged trees. • Locates underground u�li�es. • Plants bare root trees in City's nursery and maintains trees. • Performs snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm damage clean-up, and ice-ska�ng area maintenance. • Assists in maintaining computerized service requests, street tree inventory, private trim no�ces, commercial contractor services, chemical applica�ons and safety concerns. • Par�cipates in ini�al inspec�on of new requests and ini�ates trim no�ces for non-City trees. • Maintains appropriate records of daily work logs for monthly reports, public requests for tree plan�ng and removal, stump removal and inventories of previously planted trees. • Assists other divisions, contractors and agencies as needed. • Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments. • Monitors expenses and purchasing for daily opera�ons. • Performs inspec�on of and minor repair on equipment including chain saws, wood chipper, tree spade, bucket truck, roto �ller and various hand tools. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related Updated: March 2024 experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Forestry or related. Experience in forestry or related field. • Iowa Department of Agriculture Commercial Pes�cide Applicator Cer�fica�on required. Forkli� and backhoe cer�fica�on must be obtained within 6 months of hire. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Tree Risk Assessment Qualifica�on (TRAQ) training. ISA Cer�fied Arborist or Cer�fied Municipal Arborist. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons. • Ability to read technical materials and maps, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals and prepare writen log sheets and records. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on. • Ability to write rou�ne reports and correspondence. • Knowledge of arboricultural techniques including heavy rigging for removal of trees and dead or hazardous limbs. • Knowledge of tree diseases. • Knowledge of tree maintenance and tree iden�fica�on. • Skill in opera�ng and maintaining variety of tools and equipment used in forestry and landscaping. • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
