In charge of sweeper program and operates heavy equipment and serves as lead working in construc�ng, maintaining, and repairing streets. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Sweeps and flushes streets. • Coordinates and monitors all sweeper program du�es; assists in coordina�on of special sweeper events. • Performs periodic preven�ve maintenance on equipment and daily light maintenance on equipment. • Enters and tracks data and informa�on into asset management system and reconciles purchase card statements. • Installs and fabricates street signs according to MUTCD Standards. • Performs safety checks on sweepers and other equipment. • Plans routes; supervises and inspects other sweepers, operators and routes. • Performs daily sweeper maintenance such as grease, fill water, filters changes and brooms. • Builds and repairs bridge railings, wing walls and catch basins. • Removes concrete from streets and replaces subbase and sets forms; pours and finishes concrete. • Relays hot asphalt to City streets for maintenance ac�vi�es; repairs asphalt streets; constructs and repairs sidewalks. • Operates heavy equipment including end loader, tractors, motor grader, rollers, backhoe, and dump trucks. • Assists in removing snow, ice and leaves from roadways. • Assists in road oiling and chipping, cu�ng of trees and brush. • Removes trees and brush from bridge piers, creek banks and along roadsides. • Cleans and maintains equipment used in street repairs and construc�on. Updated: March 2024 • Assists in training, delega�ng and monitoring the work ac�vi�es of employees involved in street repairs, as assigned. • Determines materials and staffing appropriate for assigned job; orders materials. • Manages and adheres to work zone safety areas and rules. • Performs on-call du�es. • Designs and fabricates new equipment to accomplish tasks. • Par�cipates in prepara�on for special events such as road races, parades and block par�es. • Works with outside contractors on any City project like storm clean-up. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in street maintenance, construction, street sweeping, equipment maintenance, or related. • Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the posi�on. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to add, subtract, mul�ply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common frac�ons, and decimals. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to compute rate, ra�o, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on in one-on-one and small group situa�ons to customers and other employees of the organiza�on. • Ability to follow oral and writen instruc�ons. • Ability to prepare writen work records. • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. Updated: March 2024 • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques used in maintenance and construc�on ac�vi�es and knowledge of occupa�onal hazards and proper precau�ons. • Knowledge of use and care of a variety of hand tools and equipment. • Skill in sweeper opera�ons and machinery maintenance. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
