HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWIII - StreetsUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Maintenance Worker III – Streets Department: Public Works Division: Streets & Traffic Engineering Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 11 Job Number: 1106 Job Summary Under general direc�on, operates heavy equipment and serves as lead worker in construc�ng, maintaining, and repairing streets. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Builds and repairs bridge railings, wing walls and catch basins. • Removes concrete from streets; replaces subbase and sets forms; pours and finishes concrete. • Relays hot asphalt to City streets for maintenance ac�vi�es; repairs asphalt streets; constructs and repairs sidewalks. • Operates heavy equipment including end loader, tractors, motor grader, rollers, backhoe, excavator, and dump trucks. • Maintains pavement markings including street markings, parking stalls, crosswalks, school crossings and stop bars. • Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments. • Assists in removing snow, ice, and leaves from roadways. • Assists in road oiling and chipping, cu�ng of trees and brush. • Removes trees and brush from bridge piers, creek banks and along roadsides. • Cleans and maintains equipment used in street repairs and construc�on. • Assists in training, delega�ng, and monitoring the work ac�vi�es of employees involved in street repairs, as assigned. • Determines materials and staffing appropriate for assigned job and orders materials. • Manages and adheres to work zone safety areas and rules. • Performs on-call du�es. • Designs and fabricates new equipment to accomplish tasks. • Par�cipates in prepara�on for special events such as road races, parades, and block par�es. • Installs and fabricates street signs according to MUTCD Standards. Updated: March 2024 • Enters and tracks data and informa�on into asset management system and reconciles purchase card statements. • Works with outside contractors on any City project like storm clean-up. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in street maintenance, construction, or related. • Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the posi�on. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on in one-on-one and small group situa�ons to customers and other employees of the organiza�on. • Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and to calculate cubic yards and tons to fill cement and asphalt voids. • Ability to prepare writen work records. • Ability to read and comprehend assignment sheets, route maps, work instruc�on and equipment maintenance manuals, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. • Ability to read tape measure to cut lumber or figure area to order materials, ability to calculate figures and amounts such as propor�ons, percentages, area, circumference, and volume, and apply basic geometry. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Knowledge of street construc�on and maintenance procedures. • Skill in the opera�on of light and heavy equipment including trucks, end loaders, sanders, backhoe, jack hammers, snow removal equipment and various hand tools.
