Job Summary
Serves as an employee safety resource contact for divisions and department opera�ons.
Conducts safety training for all departments and assists/audits compliance with OSHA
regula�ons.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Plans, coordinates, and par�cipates in educa�on and training programs, including
training by outside experts.
• Manages and par�cipates in thirteen department/division safety commitees.
• Develops and maintains the technical and safety training library, including audio visual
materials.
• Conducts inspec�ons of all City facili�es, playgrounds and work sites to iden�fy
hazardous working condi�ons and prac�ces and advises on correc�ve
recommenda�ons.
• Conducts industrial hygiene monitoring to develop sta�s�cal informa�on for compliance
and training needs.
• Researches and stays current on technical and legisla�ve changes covering occupa�onal,
industrial hygiene and environmental safety issues.
• Oversees conformity to federal, state and industrial standards.
• Assists in the inves�ga�on and analysis of accidents and injuries and offers
recommenda�ons for preven�on.
• Recommends and implements prac�ces, regula�ons, and procedures to reduce vehicle
accidents and occupa�onal injuries.
• Manages a recordkeeping system to ensure efficient administra�on of the Worker's
Compensa�on program and other recordkeeping requirements.
• Develops and manages safety incen�ve and safety recogni�on programs.
• Collects injury and equipment damage data and prepares reports.
• Audits division safety programs for upda�ng and compliance.
• Arranges and oversees workplace assessments by safety and medical experts.
• Recommends safety equipment and makes purchases.

Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on; or four years of related
experience and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Degree in
Educa�on, Occupa�onal Safety, Engineering, or related. Experience in workplace
occupa�onal safety.
• Instructor level cer�fied in CPR and AED required within 6 months of hire. Valid State of
Iowa driver's license with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass
criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on and one year of related
experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on of
educa�on and experience.
• Occupa�onal Health and Safety Professional cer�fica�on.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions,
propor�ons, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to create or develop new programs to meet goals.
• Ability to effec�vely present informa�on and respond to ques�ons from groups of
managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
• Ability to organize and manage detailed technical regulatory and training materials.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals,
technical procedures, or governmental regula�ons.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Knowledge of federal and state safety and health standards.
• Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
• Skills in analysis, problem solving, observa�on and audits.
• Skills in verbal and writen communica�on, par�cularly the ability to train others.
