Job Summary
Plans, coordinates and administers City programs for older adults, including management and
support for conduc�ng fundraising and stewardship ac�vi�es.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Collaborates with a representa�ve group of staff, par�cipants, the Senior Center
Commission and advisory groups and community members to develop, ar�culate and
promote a vibrant vision for the Senior Center that establishes meaningful engagement
and ac�ve support for older adults and generates enthusiasm for the Senior Center
within the community.
• Coordinates/oversees the ac�vi�es of individuals providing volunteer services to the
Senior Center’s programs.
• Par�cipates in select Senior Center programs and maintains day-to-day interac�ons with
par�cipants and visitors.
• Represents the Senior Center and ac�vely par�cipates with community-based groups,
commitees and boards that focus on aging-related issues.
• Establishes networks among people, organiza�ons and businesses that will support and
further the Senior Center ’s mission.
• Serves as the City spokesperson in the community on aging and services.
• Manages the alloca�on of space for internal and external users of the Senior Center and
oversees rental usage agreements and tenant contracts, responds to facility user
requests and complaints.
• Provides staff support and technical assistance to the Senior Center Commission.
• Prepares, administers and monitors the department’s opera�onal and capital budgets.
• Serves as staff liaison to Friends of the Senior Center ’s Board of Directors, par�cipates in
developing and implemen�ng all fundraising and management ac�vi�es of the group,
serves as Treasurer/Secretary of the Friends Board of Directors.
• Develops par�cipant and community-based evalua�on strategies to assess current
programs and services for relevance, access, and cost, analyzes program results and
implements changes.

• Manages the use and terms of independent contractor agreements.
• Reports to the City Council and Johnson County Board of Supervisors on opera�ons,
programming and proposed changes and requests.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other du�es as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on and three to five years of
related experience; or seven years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on
of educa�on and experience. Degree in Social Work, Gerontology, or related. Experience
in senior services and administra�on.
• Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Master’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on and five years of related
experience; and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Experience in
fundraising.
• Cer�fica�on in CPR and the use of an external automated defibrillator.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions,
propor�ons, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to coordinate effec�vely with employee groups, special interest groups, other
agencies and city departments, and the general public.
• Ability to develop and present mathema�cal budget informa�on.
• Ability to effec�vely present informa�on to top management, public groups, and/or
boards of directors.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
• Ability to read and understand technical materials, reports and journals, financial
reports, and legal documents.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory
agencies, or members of the business community.
• Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists.
• Ability to write speeches and ar�cles for publica�on that conform to prescribed style
and format.
• Knowledge and skill in fundraising.
• Knowledge of current and projected trends in aging and aging services.

• Knowledge of the evolving needs and interests of aging residents; available community,
state, and federal resources; and social issues and events affec�ng the wellbeing of the
aging popula�on.
• Skill in management, listening, nego�a�on, and oral and writen communica�on.
• Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
Supervision
Assists with the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of a program function or unit for
the department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's
policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include supervising direct reports including
interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; writing
and delivering performance reviews; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing
complaints and resolving problems; and terminating employees.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Duties are generally performed in
