HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior MW - StreetsUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Senior Maintenance Worker – Streets Department: Public Works Division: Streets & Traffic Engineering Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 14 Job Number: 1407 Job Summary Under direc�on, directs work crews and par�cipates in the construc�on, maintenance and repair of City streets and related facili�es. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Directs assigned work crews and par�cipates in the repair and replacement of concrete and asphalt in the City streets and snow removal opera�ons. • Checks work zones for safety and that crews are working in a safe and secure manner. • Prepares reports and records of daily projects. • Inspects areas that need to be repaired. • Enters and tracks data and informa�on into asset management system, and reconciles purchase card statements. • Oversees and par�cipates in preventa�ve maintenance ac�vi�es. • Builds and repairs bridge railings, wing walls and catch basins. • Removes concrete from streets, replaces sub-base and sets forms; pours and finishes concrete. • Relays hot asphalt to City streets for maintenance ac�vi�es. • Repairs asphalt streets. • Constructs and repairs sidewalks. • Operates heavy equipment including end loader, tractors, motor grader, rollers, backhoe, and dump trucks. • Assists in removing snow, ice and leaves from roadways; assists in road oiling and chipping, cu�ng of trees and brush. • Removes trees and brush from bridge piers, creek banks and along roadsides. • Orders and inventories materials for jobs as needed. • Assists in design, fabrica�on and ordering specifica�ons for new equipment. • Cleans and maintains equipment used in street repairs and construc�on. • Works with the public to answer ques�ons about projects; resolves complaints. • Works with outside contractors on projects. Updated: March 2024 • Installs and fabricates street signs according to MUTCD Standards. • Implements division goals, policies and procedures established by the Superintendent. • Performs on-call du�es. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related experience; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Construction Science or related. Experience in street construction and maintenance work. • Forkli� cer�fica�on. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Na�onal Incident Management System Training ICS 100, IS 700 within two years of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the posi�on. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on in one-on-one and small group situa�ons to customers and other employees of the organiza�on. • Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and to calculate cubic yards and tons to fill cement and asphalt voids. • Ability to prepare writen work records. • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, blueprints, sketches and grade markers, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons and procedure manuals. • Ability to read tape measure to cut lumber or figure area to order materials, ability to calculate figures and amounts such as propor�ons, percentages, area, circumference, and volume, and apply basic geometry. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Knowledge of street maintenance and construc�on methods and procedures. • Skill in assigning, inspec�ng and evalua�ng the work of assigned crew. Updated: March 2024 • Skill in opera�ng concrete saw, jack hammer, leave vacuum, loaders, tamper, rollers, chain saws, weed trimmers and mowers. • Skill in opera�ng heavy and complex machinery requiring good spa�al percep�on. • Skill in recordkeeping and the maintenance of office files. Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance review.
