HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior MW - Wastewater CollectionUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Senior Maintenance Worker – Wastewater Collec�on Department: Public Works Division: Wastewater Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Wastewater / Wastewater Superintendent FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 14 Job Number: 1414 Job Summary Under direc�on, serves as group leader to assigned work crews and par�cipates in the maintenance and repair of sewer collec�on system. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Implements division goals, policies and procedures established by the Wastewater Superintendent. • Monitors, inspects, and evaluates the opera�on of the sewer collec�on system. • Schedules and evaluates maintenance ac�vi�es for the sewer collec�on system and assigned work crews including crew assignment and loca�ons. • Directs and trains assigned work crews; par�cipates in the maintenance and repair of the sewer collec�on system. • Works closely with engineers, field inspectors, and construc�on crews to coordinate the planning, installa�on, and repair of wastewater infrastructure. • Performs preven�ve maintenance to sewer collec�on system duplicate, checks for proper flow, broken pipes, and general working condi�on. • Cleans sewer lines on a regular basis using jet truck, vacuum truck and other tools and techniques. • Performs sewer inspec�ons with televising equipment and other tools and techniques. • Meets with u�li�es, contractors, and general public regarding sewer complaints (blockage, odors, pipe breaks). • Reviews Engineering plans and specifica�ons for sewer projects; provides comments. • Observes, reviews, and evaluates new construc�on of sewers and li� sta�ons; inspects exis�ng rehabilita�on and repair projects. • Provides loca�ons for u�lity work and new construc�on, excava�ng, tree plan�ng, fences, and other projects when work is performed in area of sewers. • Completes reports, maintains data, trains staff, and enters informa�on into computer system including GIS and Asset Management System. • Orders and purchases parts, supplies, and equipment as needed. Updated: March 2024 • Coordinates equipment maintenance with the service department. • Reconciles purchase card statements. • Performs on-call du�es; responds to emergencies of equipment failure at the Wastewater treatment plant, li� sta�ons and collec�on system; enters log of complaints and work records into computer. • Coordinates with Engineers and other technicians in conduc�ng inflow and infiltra�on studies with special techniques, procedures, and equipment. • Installs, maintains, and evaluates special equipment; prepares reports. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in wastewater and sewer collection system maintenance. • State of Iowa DNR Grade III Wastewater Operator cer�ficate. Confined space entry training. Forkli� cer�fica�on required within two years of appointment. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Na�onal Incident Management System Training ICS 100, IS 700 within two years of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the posi�on. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. • State of Iowa DNR Grade IV Wastewater Operator cer�ficate. Competent person training in shoring and trenching. Associa�on of Boards of Cer�fica�on Wastewater Collec�on cer�ficate. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on and respond to ques�ons from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and calculate capaci�es, flows and quan��es. • Ability to prepare writen reports and logs, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Updated: March 2024 • Ability to read and interpret technical materials and blueprints, specifica�ons, electrical schema�cs, gauges, charts and data sheets, and government regula�ons. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists. • Ability to troubleshoot computers and mechanical equipment malfunc�ons. • Knowledge of City sewer collec�on system including loca�on of manholes, flow direc�on and flow rate. • Knowledge of computerized record-keeping procedures. • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing and mechanical maintenance methods. • Skill in organizing and direc�ng mul�ple projects and work teams simultaneously. • Skill in the opera�on specialized equipment used in wastewater treatment processes. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance review.
