Job Summary
Under direc�on, serves as a group leader in maintaining and repairing pumps, motors, valves,
gauges, and general equipment in wastewater treatment processes. Coordinates informa�on
between lab, opera�ons, and sewer collec�ons.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Implements division goals, policies and procedures established by the Wastewater
Superintendent.
• Inspects and evaluates plant equipment, supplies, and services.
• Schedules and priori�zes maintenance of plant equipment, staffing needs, training
needs and outside contractor services.
• Inspects, evaluates, schedules, and oversees maintenance and opera�ons of collec�on
system li� sta�ons.
• Coordinates work teams working on various aspects of complex control, plant
construc�on or processing equipment in the plant.
• Delegates and monitors assigned personnel, on a rota�onal basis, in repair and
maintenance du�es at the wastewater treatment plant and li� sta�ons.
• Consults with opera�ons on plant performance, improvements, and repairs; determines
cost-effec�ve methods of opera�ons and repair.
• Trains assigned employees including Maintenance Operators, Maintenance Worker II,
Maintenance Worker I, Electronic Technicians and Treatment Plant Operators in
maintenance procedures and appropriate skill development as well as safety
procedures,
• Establishes technical and safety procedures and standards.
• Reviews, maintains, and presents daily logs, schedules, and reports.
• Inspects and evaluates plant equipment for installa�on, modifica�on, redesign and/or
development, troubleshoots equipment and plant repairs.

• Performs on-call du�es, responds to emergencies of equipment failure at the
wastewater treatment plant, li� sta�ons and collec�on system, enters log of complaints
and work records into computer.
• Contacts technical representa�ves and equipment vendors and suppliers, solicits bids
and purchases supplies and equipment as needed; works with equipment vendors.
• Monitors work of outside contractors and evaluates compliance with contractual
agreements.
• Consults with other division group leaders and evaluates plant performance; sets
division goals; determines maintenance priori�es.
• Performs inspec�ons for stormwater management, spill preven�on control and counter
measures.
• Plans for new projects with staff for project improvements.
• Operates treatment plant when on-call or as needed.
• Writes specifica�ons for equipment.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other du�es as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience. Experience in wastewater operations and/or maintenance.
• State of Iowa DNR Grade II Wastewater Operator cer�ficate. State of Iowa DNR Grade III
Wastewater Operator cer�ficate required within 2 years of appointment. Forkli�
cer�fica�on required within two years of appointment. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid
State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on.
Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank
endorsements within 6 months of hire. Na�onal Incident Management System Training
ICS 100, IS 700 within two years of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements.
Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal
background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa
within one year of appointment to the posi�on.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• State of Iowa DNR Grade IV Wastewater Operator cer�ficate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to effec�vely present informa�on and respond to ques�ons from groups of
managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.

• Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and calculate capaci�es, flows and
quan��es.
• Ability to prepare writen reports and logs, business correspondence, and procedure
manuals.
• Ability to read and interpret technical materials and blueprints, specifica�ons, electrical
schema�cs, gauges, charts and data sheets, and government regula�ons.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists.
• Ability to troubleshoot computers and mechanical equipment malfunc�ons.
• Knowledge of electrical, plumbing and mechanical maintenance methods.
• Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and related equipment.
• Skill in organizing and direc�ng mul�ple projects and work teams simultaneously.
• Skill in the opera�on of specialized equipment used in wastewater treatment process.
• Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
Supervision
Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to
permanent staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out
disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance
review.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving
mechanical parts, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic
chemicals, risk of electrical shock, vibration, and traffic hazards. The employee is frequently
