I would draw to the attention of the COIC – and the departments that a small, 40 person fun run will take place prior to, but will not in anyway create difficulty for either events and that our executive race director will contact the Old Capitol Criterium bike race director and will advise that there is an early morning fun run just prior to ours. We work closely with Old Cap to be sure that both events run smoothly!! Let me know if you need anything else but I believe we are good to go! We very much like to have the many various races go through City Park as we believe it provides a great setting for the runners and spectators. It is our responsibility however to consider and provide for the safety of all the persons who wish to use the park. As you noted in your application, last year the runners used the road. Since the road is two lane and is narrower than a standard two lane city street, having the runners on the road creates the potential conflict of vehicles meeting while also passing runners. This situation did occur last year, thankfully without incident, but several drivers reported to our park security personnel that they thought it was dangerous. The trails in City park should be very adequate for the race. In a few places they are 8 feet wide but most are 10 feet wide which should allow for runners to run at least three abreast. From my conversations with several friends who ran last year this should not be difficult by this stage of the race. As I mentioned above we enjoy very much that many races use city park, but for the safety of everyone concerned we must require that the runners stay on the trails. To be honest I am not sure how this was missed on last year’s application because it should have been noticed and pointed out. This information will also be forwarded to the City Manager’s office. At present, I have not received any telephone calls nor e-mails – but I have every certainty that there will be a smooth transition from their fun run to our event. I will keep you posted and let you know once I hear from them – if there are any modifications necessary, however, based upon the remarkably small turn out for their event, the changes in course as they are only running a 5k and the early starting point, I see no difficulty whatsoever.
