HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-16-1999 ICPD Reports/Memos ICPD TRAINING DATE: February 8, 1999 TO: Chief Winkelhake FROM: Captain Widmer KEF: January Training Report :< DOG }IANDLER TRAINING (January 4-31 ) Gretna, NE Officer Gist The newly selected officer to be trained with the Iowa City K-9 is Ron Gist. He will be attending the training with "Gallo" through the first week of February. Together they are undergoing rigorous training in drug searches, building searches, and tracking. SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM TRAINING Team Exercise/Tactics/Scenarios (January 5) Iowa City Police DepartmentYSlater Hall 16 SRT Officers, 2 Absent Members were given one of two scenarios and worked as a team to devise a plan to resolve the situation. One group worked with a barricaded subject situation and the other worked with a hostage situation. All SRT members were transported to Slate Hall where they put their plans into action through a mock scenario. Both groups also worked on stairwell ascent and descent. Part of this exercise was during hours of darkness. Range Training (January 19 or 20) Washington County Range 8 SRT Officers on 19t~, 10 SRT Officers on the 20~ All SRT officers responded to the DNR gun range in Washington County. There they practiced/qualified with their assigned weapons, MP-5 or shotgun. Those assigned as Marksmen qualified with the rifle. Ail SRT members were ran through an exercise involving a room entry. It should be noted that 4 Marksman logged a total of 20 hours of additional rifle qualification this month. I~[ATS TRAINING - Session tgi (January 11-14) Johnson County Fairgrounds/Mercer Park/Civic Center Average 11 Officers Each Iowa City Officer is scheduled to attend four days of training. Jointly with Johnson County SO, Coralville PD and University DPS, instruction is received in Hazmat, Bloodboume Pathogens, Alzheimer's Disease Sensitivity, CPR, ASP, Defensive Tactics, Vehicle Operation and County Attorney Issues. The 4t~ day of MATS does not include other agencies. Training is received in fire extinguisher operation, evacuation plan, hazard communications/employee right to know, first aid kits, rescue disk, respirator fit, community policing/probation partnership, Use of Force review and Communication Diversity (individual topic synopsis available in "1999 MATS Course Content Guide). MATS is an annual training coveting legal and legislatively mandated subjects as well as targeted needs. ADVANCED REID (January 11-12) Mobile Training Unit IV - John E. Reid & Associates, Inc. Lt. Wyss, Officers Humrichouse and Platz This training builds on the Basic Reid Training, which is a prerequisite. Dealt with are subjects such as psychological profiling based on an interview, ways to get defiant suspects to listen to you, ways to change the suspect's perception of the interrogator, ways to quickly lead a guilty suspect to an admission, and how to reverse a suspect's defensive tactics. (J nuar ) Iowa City Police Department 12 Officers During the month of January, individual officers were required to demonstrate proficiency in a skill builder (Mini Action Pistol Competition) from the Competition Shooting Disc.
