HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-09-1999 ICPD Reports/Memos ICPD TRAINING DATE: March 2, 1999 TO: Chief Winkelhake FROM: Captain Widmer KEF: February Training Report ADVANCED CRIME PREVENTION SCHOOL (February 1-5) Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Officer Singleman This five-day course is designed to provide an in-depth look into crime prevention programming. It is intended to provide advanced training and materials which will build on basic crime prevention skills. Students study exisfmg successful crime prevention programs, how to implement these programs within their community, and where to obtain the necessary resources. SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM TRAINING Team Exercise/Tactics/Scanarios (February 2) Iowa City Police Department/Rabbit Road Location 18 SRT Officers (entire team present) Members worked on simulations involving marksman initiated dynamic entries and transition to cover entries. In addition, gas mask fitting and testing was done just prior to being exposed to live gas. Range Training (February 16 or 17) Washington County Range 12 SRT Officers on 16t~, 6 SRT Officers on the 17t~ All SRT officers responded to the DNR gun range in Washington County. There they practiced/qualified with their assigned weapons, Marksman rifle, MP-5 or shotgun. Those assigned as Marksmen qualified with the rifle. All SRT members were ran through an exercise involving firing their handguns while on the move. MATS TRAINING - Session #~ (February 8-11) Johnson County Fairgrounds/Mercer Park/Civic Center Average 17 Officers Each Iowa City Officer is scheduled to attend four days of training. Jointly with Johnson County SO, Coralville PD and University DPS, instruction is received in Hazmat, Bloodboume Pathogens, Alzheimer's Disease Sensitivity, CP1L ASP, Defensive Tactics, Vehicle Operation and County Attorney Issues. The 4th day of MATS does not include other agencies. Training is received in fire extinguisher operation, evacuation plan, hazard communications/employee right to know, first aid kits, rescue disk, respirator fit, community policing/probation partnership, Use of Force review and Communication Diversity (individual topic synopsis available in "1999 MATS Course Content Guide). MATS is an annual training covering legal and legislatively mandated subjects as well as targeted needs. POLICE-MEDIA RELATIONS (February 10-11) Mobile Training Unit 1V - Rick Rosenthal Sgt. Lord Sgt. Lord is assigned as the Iowa City Police Department media liaison officer. This training seeks to enhance an agency's relationship with the news media in an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation, to ensure maximum dissemination of information under controls consistent with the needs of law enforcement. CRIMES AGAINST CF/II.DREN-FBI REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM (February 10-12) St. Louis, MO Officer Protaskey Officer Protaskey was invited by the FBI to participate in this training. It focused on sexual offenders who target children as victims over the internet. Attendance gave her the opportunity to pick up valuable resource information and network with contacts for this type of investigation. MATS is an annual training covering legal and legislatively mandated subjects as well as targeted needs. SEX CRIMES INVESTIGATOR'S CONFERENCE (February 22-24) Des Moines, IA Sgt. Lord, Officers Protaskey & Shaffer This conference is intended for those officers responsible for investigating or supervising sex crimes investigations. It provides update training in various related topics as well as affords opportunities to network with other investigators from around the state. Sift. Lord is a past president of this organization. F.A.T.S. (February) Iowa City Police Department 21 Officers During the month of February, the same course of training was repeated from February. Individual officers were reqfftred to demonstrate proficiency in a skill builder (IvYmi Action Pistol Competition) from the Competition Shoofmg Disc. They were then exposed to cither scenario #2 (vehicle stop) or #8 (father-daughter domestic) Copy: City Manager PCRB
