CLARIFICATION
The Iowa City Police Citizens
Review Board, in past discus-
sions with the police depart-
ment, asked whether the depart-
ment uses racial profiling in
making traffic stops. Police
Chief R.J. Winkelhake said he
informed the board that it does
not but, after discussing the
issue within the department,
Winkelhake decided to gather
data regarding the race and
gender of motorists stopped.
How the decision to gather data
was made was unclear in a
story in Tuesday's Gazette.
The Gazette will respond to complaints
about the accuracy, fairness and complete
ness of news reports and headlines in the
newspaper. When a news report is found
In be wrong or misleading, a correction or
clarification will be published in this
space Phone 398-8313.
