for traffic control from Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies to ensure safety of the cyclists at these turns.
After the turn around, cyclists will ride back on the same course toward Napoleon Park.
After transitioning from the bicycle leg to the second run leg, participants will go north on trail from
Napoleon Park , toward Highway 6 and following the trail along Clinton St, turning west along Benton St,
then continuing along Highway 1/S. Riverside Dr. At S. Riverside Dr and Burlington St, runners will turn
right onto Burlington. Continuing on the trail then sidewalk, runners will turn right from Burlington onto
Madison St, left onto Prentiss St from Madison and right onto Capitol St from Prentiss. Runners will
reconnect with the trail at Capitol and Benton St and follow it south returning toward Napoleon Park
and the finish line. ICPD assistance is requested at the turns from Madison St onto Prentiss and from

Adam,
I spoke with Pasha Korsakov at length today about his duathlon proposal (I don’t think I’ve actually seen a Permit
Application, just the attached document). I have been impressed with his awareness of the issues involved and have
worked out traffic assignments for our officers. At this point, the ICPD will only need to have three (3) officers involved.
The limited number of officers needed is due, in great part, to Pasha’s estimate of 100 to 150 participants and the fact
that they will be using trails and sidewalks for much of the run portions of the race. Pasha has/will continue to
coordinate other parts of the course with other jurisdictions.
Pasha and I will reassess the particulars of ICPD staffing in later May when he has a better idea of how many participants
will be in the race.
The ICPD approves the route, as proposed.

This looks good for Public Works, but I am not sure what the status of the Terry Trueblood Recreational Area
construction will be. Be sure to check with Mike on that.
Thanks,

Hi Adam,
I'm writing to hopefully set up a time to discuss trying to hold the Iowa City Duathlon in the spring of 2013. I've
attached a revised plan based on some of the concerns the police officers had when we spoke last. I'm hoping
now that we have a bit more time to plan, we can make a great event happen.
I've attached the permit and a general plan with maps included, but of course we can discuss in more detail
when we have time to meet. I'm pretty flexible most days so it would be great to meet as soon as all parties and
departments involved have time. Thanks in advance.

st
Adam – both the 1 run and the bike route seem fairly straight-forward. With respect run #2, Police may be necessary
at both the bridge crossings (Burlington & Benton) unless the plan is to stay on the sidewalks (which may not be
feasible). Participants should be reminded to be courteous of other non-participants using the sidewalk/trail system as
they will not be closed to the public.
The county should also be notified of these plans.

Adam,
Last year the Pride Parade started at 12:00 PM. If that is the same time line they will follow this year, the race will not
interfere with the parade. In the past, we have not had any staffing at the Pride Festival.

Adam,
Let me look into this. I think the Pride Parade is later in the day (after 11:00 AM). If so, it will work fine to have both
events.

This event will take place the same day as the Pride Festival and Parade downtown. I note that none of the events
