Staff Present: Linda Kopping, Kristin Kromray, Michelle Buhman
Others Present: None
RECOMMENDATIONS TO COUNCIL:
None.
CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Honohan at 4:00 PM.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM MARCH 21, 2013 MEETING:
Motion: To accept the minutes from the March 21, 2013 meeting. Motion
carried on a vote of 5/0. Mitchell/Felling.
PUBLIC DISCUSSION OF ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA:
None.
COMMISSION ASSIGNMENTS:
Honohan will attend an upcoming city council meeting.
STEERING COUNCIL REPORT:
Mitchell reported that the Spring Forum was held on April 16th. Feedback
regarding the presentation by the MSW students who worked with Kopping on
the focus groups was positive. The Membership Committee will be working on
improvements for next year's forum including a potential name change to "annual
meeting" and a standard format to be followed from year to year.
Preliminary Minutes
May 2013
The Membership Committee is working on setting up a date for a Newcomers
Breakfast to be held in July and is beginning to discuss a docent tour program at
the Senior Center.
The Outreach Committee is continuing to look for opinion page editorials. This
month will be an article written by the MSW students regarding the focus groups
and their experiences at the Senior Center. Kopping met with the noon rotary
club in regards to the digital signage that the Senior Center has been looking
into.
The Program Committee is working on program ideas for fall. The trip to Van
Buran County will take in July but the trip to Hannibal, Missouri is not going to
occur this summer. On June 13th a presentation called "An Afternoon in a
Chinese Courtyard" will occur in the Assembly Room. The presentation will
include a poetry reading by Michael Chan, a tai chi demonstration and a DVD
illustration of pipa music in the background.
DISCUSSION ON DEVELOPING REGULATIONS FOR SERVING ALCOHOL
AT SENIOR CENTER EVENTS:
Honohan suggested that instead of incorporating the alcohol regulations into the
operations handbook section 12.6.2 that a separate regulation for alcohol be
made. The commission discussed Honohan's suggestions. Commissioners
agreed that there should be no membership discount rentals involving alcohol.
OPERATIONAL OVERVIEW:
Kopping reported that she has been in communication with the company who is
installing the Senior Center's front sign. They will be installing it Friday May 17th
Staff and a few members watched a demonstration from Four Winds Electronic
Signage. This digital signage has the ability to display our weekly schedule,
pathfinding maps through the building and information about the Senior Center
and various programs. A number of screens were discussed and could direct
new people to the building since the Senior Center has various public entrances
and only one entrance has a receptionist.
Kopping reported that the New Horizons Band has decided to table any
discussion of leaving the Senior Center.
Kopping reported that there has been discussion in City Staff meetings in regards
to new Iowa property tax law which is expected to adversely affect the City
budget.
Preliminary Minutes
May 2013
Kopping reported that the County has granted the Senior Center the $56,000 that
was requested. This amount is the proportionate to the number of members that
come from unincorporated areas. This money will not to be taken out the rural tax
fund as requested but out of the general fund.
STAFF REPORTS:
Honohan commented that the Recycling Nomination submitted by Michelle
Buhman to the Iowa Recycling Association was very impressive.
COMMISSION DISCUSSION:
Felling suggested that additional signage or information be available about the
AED devices in the Senior Center.
ADJOURNMENT:
Motion: To Adjourn. Motion carried on a vote of 5/0. Felling/Mitchell.

IOWA CITY/JOHNSON COUNTY SENIOR CENTER
Memorandum
To: Senior Center Commission
From: Emily Light, Community Outreach Specialist
Date: July 16, 2013
Community Outreach Committee
The committee last met on July 10, 2013. At this meeting members reviewed the committee's
goals for 2013 and discussed progress on the goals. This discussion will resume at the August 7
meeting. Members brainstormed additional distribution locations for the fall program guide,
including the County Health Department, Elder Services, the North Liberty rec center, and La
Reyna grocery store. It was suggested that the a Center Ambassador might provide a short
Senior Center introduction/overview prior to the start of programs occurring at The Center with
a large number of non-members in attendance, such as the 100 Grannies environmental movie
screenings. Building tours could be offered, or visitors could be invited to come for a regularly
scheduled tour and orientation.
A training and review session for the Center Ambassadors was held on June 26. New committee
members were introduced to the process of giving a Senior Center outreach presentation. The
next speaking engagements for the Center Ambassadors are scheduled at Regency Heights on
July 19. Two presentations will be given that day, one in each building. Center Ambassadors
staffed a Senior Center booth at the Pride Festival on June 15, making approximately 72
personal contacts throughout the afternoon.
Successful Summer iPad Class Will Be Offered Again This Fall
Senior Center volunteer Tim Barker offered a new free class this summer called iPad Basics. The
class was extremely well -received, and drew lots of positive feedback (unsolicited). Here is what
one member said of Tim's class:
"I have taken two other basic computer courses offered for seniors, one at Kirkwood and
another at The Center. Tim's was by far the best. He was able to present the material in
such a way that even we most computer illiterate seniors could actually learn how to use
the many features the Wad offers. His enthusiasm and never ending patience kept us
going. 1 hope he will be willing to teach more courses. If so 1 will definitely be there."
The free 3-week iPad Basics class will be offered twice this fall for Senior Center members.
Watch for the description in the fall program guide, which will be released around August 15.

Fall Program Guide
All of the materials for the fall program guide have been collected, edited, and organized. They
are now in the hands of our designer at the Quad City Times. There are many exciting
programs, events, and services in store for this fall. A few new programs include:
1. Understanding the Brain: New Senior Center volunteer, Jeff Plume (look for him at the
building supervisor desk on Sundays), will offer this Great Courses video lecture class.
Jeff is a fourth year Ph.D. candidate in the Neuroscience program at the University of
Iowa, and he will add a lot of personal knowledge to the discussions in this class.
2. Death May Be Good for Your Health: Exploring the Benefits of Thinking about Death for
a More Meaningful Life: What gives your life meaning? What matters most to you?
Often people don't consider these questions until it's too late. While we can't control
the inevitable, we can control how we choose to live. Adam Lewis, an advanced doctoral
student in the Counseling Psychology program at the University of Iowa, began offering
free counseling services at The Center this summer. He will continue this fall and next
spring, as well as offer related programs to Center participants.
3. Art and Love in the Films of Woody Allen: Gerald Sim, a film professor at Florida Atlantic
University and Ph.D. alum from the University of Iowa Film Studies program, will be
visiting in early November to give a lecture on the films of Woody Allen. This program
was offered in February 2013, but was cancelled due to a severe weather closure.
4. SCTV Open House: Life Stories: On October 24 the volunteers of Senior Center Television
will showcase their creative short video works. Each producer will create a 5-10 minute
video project focusing on the theme of Life Stories. Some of the producers may reveal
stories from their own lives, some will highlight interesting episodes in the lives of
others, and some may interpret the theme a bit more unconventionally. Come to get
familiar with the work, people, and equipment of SCTV, and stay for the fresh popcorn!
