Ruebushi is a retired science teacher from Iowa City West High School interested in offering a few classes at The Center this fall. The group discussed his ideas and suggested he offer something related to climate change and weather systems. Bennett is retired from teaching at the University of Iowa and US Santa Cruz in the area of music composition. The committee listened to her proposal and enthusiastically encouraged her to offer a course in the fall. Her course will be tilled Music, the Composer; and You, The Listener. Schulein is scheduled to offer some history courses this summer and proposed offering a one hour presentation on the history of the Longfellow Neighborhood, Beth Fisher, ICPL representative, offered the library space for this program in the fall. The committee agreed this would be a great community partnership and the program will be held at the library. Gutmann proposed a program idea based her experience with a Senior Center group in West Virginia. She asked the committee to find a volunteer, retired literature instructor or someone with some experience in literature, who would lead a group of participants who would read selected material each week and share personal stories as they related to the material. The committee asked her to put her ideas in writing to help clarify what she is looking for and help in volunteer recruitment. The EarthBoxes have been distributed to all four locations, Emerson Point, Bickford Cottage, Pathways and Ecumenical Towers (Chauncey Swan). There are two volunteers from Master Gardeners who have agreed to help with the planting and monitor the progress. The plants are looking great and the tomatoes are in need of cages. The next step in the process is to work with the Master Gardeners to provide some educational programs at each location and develop a program evaluation. If successful, the goal will be to increase the program's reach by at least 50% next summer. I am currently working with volunteers and independent contractors on programs for Fall 2014 Visibility Action Team I am the chair of the Visibility Action Team for the Johnson County Livable Communities. Our Team is has submitted a letter of intent to have the Senior Center become a Sage Affiliate. We expect to hear back from SAGE one way or another by the end of this month. The group is hosting the film, Before Your Know 11, at the Iowa City Public Library as a part of Pride this Saturday at 3 PM. The first screening at FilmScene was attended by 50 community members and ended with a round of applause. The committee will not be meeting during the months for July and August but is still planning to offer a program for National Aids and Aging Awareness Day in September.
