Memorandum
To: Senior Center Commission

Date: June 18, 2014
Community Outreach Committee
The Community Outreach Committee elected its chair and secretary for fiscal year 2015 at the
June meeting. Ina Loewenberg will serve as chair, and the secretary duties will be shared by
Sheila Vedder and Bryson Dean between July 2014 and June 2015.
The committee organized The Center's participation in the "Minds Matter" Team Trivia event
on June 5 at the Coralville Marriott. The team trivia events are held several times a year to
support the Community Mental Health Center. The Center was represented by two teams (16
players) wearing Senior Center t-shirts. The teams came in a respectable 11th and 13th place out
of 40 teams. All involved had a lot of fun, and we look forward to participating again in October.
Committee members will staff a Senior Center booth at the Iowa City Pride Festival on
Saturday, June 21 from 12 — 5 PM. Volunteers at the booth will distribute program guides and
share information about The Center.
Family Folk Machine & Voices of Experience Intergenerational Concert at the Englert
All are invited to attend a fun, intergenerational performance presented by the Iowa City Senior
Center at the Englert Theatre on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 2 PM. The Englert stage will be
shared by the Senior Center's two vocal groups: Voices of Experience, a dynamic chorus of
singers ages 50 and up; and Family Folk Machine, an intergenerational choir that sings with a
folk band. The two groups will present songs as separate ensembles and collectively that reflect
on intergenerational experiences, the passing of time, and the stages of life. The singers' ages
range from four to 90+. The concert is free and open to the public; no tickets are necessary.
This event is sponsored by University of Iowa Community Credit Union.
Healing Touch Therapy Available at The Center Beginning this Summer
Free 30-minute Healing Touch sessions will be offered by Sandy Kemp, M.A., CHTP beginning
this summer. Healing Touch was developed in the 1980s by nurses for use in hospitals. It
restores the body's natural energies to aid healing. Sessions are relaxing and are given while
fully clothed. Participants may sign up for up to two sessions per year. Membership is required.
Summer appointments will be offered on Tuesdays, June 24, July 15, and August 12. Register by
contacting Sandy Kemp at 319-512-8659 or sandy.a.kemp(cDgmail.com.

Re: , -Program Report _
Date: June 19, 2014
Program Update:
The Program Committee had four guests at the June 2, 2014 meeting, Jim Ruebush, Mary Gutmann,
Tom Schulein and Wilhelmine Bennett. Ruebushi is a retired science teacher from Iowa City West High
School interested in offering a few classes at The Center this fall. The group discussed his ideas and
suggested he offer something related to climate change and weather systems. Bennett is retired from
teaching at the University of Iowa and US Santa Cruz in the area of music composition. The committee
listened to her proposal and enthusiastically encouraged her to offer a course in the fall. Her course
will be tilled Music, the Composer; and You, The Listener. Schulein is scheduled to offer some history
courses this summer and proposed offering a one hour presentation on the history of the Longfellow
Neighborhood, Beth Fisher, ICPL representative, offered the library space for this program in the fall.
The committee agreed this would be a great community partnership and the program will be held at the
library. Gutmann proposed a program idea based her experience with a Senior Center group in West
Virginia. She asked the committee to find a volunteer, retired literature instructor or someone with
some experience in literature, who would lead a group of participants who would read selected material
each week and share personal stories as they related to the material. The committee asked her to put
her ideas in writing to help clarify what she is looking for and help in volunteer recruitment.
The EarthBoxes have been distributed to all four locations, Emerson Point, Bickford Cottage, Pathways
and Ecumenical Towers (Chauncey Swan). There are two volunteers from Master Gardeners who
have agreed to help with the planting and monitor the progress. The plants are looking great and the
tomatoes are in need of cages. The next step in the process is to work with the Master Gardeners to
provide some educational programs at each location and develop a program evaluation. If successful,
the goal will be to increase the program's reach by at least 50% next summer.
I am currently working with volunteers and independent contractors on programs for Fall 2014
Visibility Action Team
I am the chair of the Visibility Action Team for the Johnson County Livable Communities. Our Team is
has submitted a letter of intent to have the Senior Center become a Sage Affiliate. We expect to hear
back from SAGE one way or another by the end of this month. The group is hosting the film, Before
Your Know 11, at the Iowa City Public Library as a part of Pride this Saturday at 3 PM. The first
screening at FilmScene was attended by 50 community members and ended with a round of applause.
The committee will not be meeting during the months for July and August but is still planning to offer a
program for National Aids and Aging Awareness Day in September.
