PARK
STAIRSTEPS ART PROJECT
The Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee is accepting
proposals from Johnson County artists for the creation of art
work on the risers of the steps located at the northwest
corner of College Green Park located at 600 E College Street in
Iowa City. There are 40 steps approximately 4” high and 70”
in width. There are 3 landings, one after each 10th step.
There is a $3000 budget for completion of the project
including all design, materials, fabrication, installation
(including securing of site) and coordination costs.
Park History/Project Theme
College Green Park is one of the oldest parks in Iowa City;
established in 1839 along with North Market Square Park. In
spite of its small size, its close proximity to downtown Iowa
City and the University of Iowa campus makes it a very
popular park providing opportunities for active play,
relaxation, and social gatherings – not only for the college age
neighbors but also for the families that live in the area. The
history of the park has played an important role in the design
of the gazebo shelter and period lighting. The park is a focal
point for the neighborhood that surrounds it and is the site of
many public events, including rallies, protests, parades and
community celebrations.
The committee encourages the proposed artwork
complement the existing park features. The artwork must be
designed such that it is be able to withstand the heavy
pedestrian traffic that uses the steps.
