HICKORY HILL PARK MASTER PLAN
Hickory Hill Park
Master Plan Description May 13, 2016 The Master Plan is being created to provide an overall plan for potential improvements for the park. An Advisory Committee has been assembled consisting of City of Iowa City Staff and representatives of Friends of Hickory Hill Park. Project goals and objectives have been established which include trail improvements, bridge improvements, wayfinding and signage and park identification. The Park Master Plan illustrates a variety of improvements. The following is a general description of these items which are shown on the park drawings:
1. Trail Improvements
• Paved trails are proposed at the three primary park entrances – Conklin Lane, N. 1st Avenue and Blooming Street. There is a potential for a paved trail through the park which would connect N. 1st Avenue to Seventh Avenue.
• Secondary trails are proposed throughout the park which would consist of a granular surface and allow City maintenance vehicles access.
• Primitive trail improvements include erosion improvements and rerouting in a few locations to minimize impact of the trails. 2. Bridge Improvements and Stream Crossings
• Proposed improvements involve bridge replacements, bridge removals and stream embankment stabilization near bridge crossings. 3. Wayfinding and Signage
• A variety of signs are proposed in the park which includes park entrance signs, wayfinding signs and interpretive signs. 4. Amenities
• Park amenities proposed in the Master Plan include benches, playgrounds, council ring, overlooks, bike loops, portable restroom and kiosk.
5. Project Phasing
• The Park Master Plan is intended to be used as a guide to park improvements as funding is allocated. For this reason, identifying higher priorities among the improvements in the park are important. The Advisory Committee has identified the higher priorities to be secondary trail improvements, bridge improvements, wayfinding and signage and if funding allows, the paved trail loop at the N. 1st Avenue entrance.
6. Input
• Receiving input on the Master Plan is important. This is the second opportunity for the public and community to provide comments on the Park Master Plan. Please take a moment to complete the comments sheet made available for input. This information will be used to finalize the Park Master Plan and move forward with park improvements. Thank you for your time!
