August 2016 The Library Channel August Update: The 2016 Summer Reading programs have come to a close, and things have calmed down quite a bit as we head towards a new school year. ICPL has had quite a few staff changes in the Children’s Department recently, and you’ll soon start seeing a bunch of new faces in our children’s programming. We’ve added storytimes recently from Angie, Nancy, Mari, Casey, and Morgan. Casey and Mari also performed a special storytime singing Songs of Peter Rabbit along with the book and utilizing an ipad app which has moving illustrations. We recently hired a new Library Channel intern for the 2016-2017 school year. She is and undergraduate in the Journalism department at the University of Iowa, and she’ll fit right in. The staff at ICPL was sadden to hear of the passing of local broadcasting legend, and a great library supporter, Dottie Ray. We were poignantly reminder of one of the Library Channel’s primary missions – to preserve local history. In 1990 Dottie was a guest on the Ellen Buchanan local history program Tell Me Your Story. This program is still being broadcast on The Library Channel, and can also be viewed online on our video stream at http://video.icpl.org September will be a very busy month for Library Channel Staff. We will be filming events for ICPL’s 2016 Intellectual Freedom Festival, two presentations about the Jingle Cross/Cyclo-Cross World Cup and the first five presentations in the Fall 2016 UI International Writing Program’s International Author’s series. The purpose of consolidating spaces is to accommodate the need for office space for a new Senior Center staff person who will work on fundraising to support The Center’s operational budget. The newly arranged SCTV space includes 3 editing stations, equipment storage, and space for volunteers to gather.  Volunteers are beginning to learn their way around the Final Cut X editing software on two new computers. SCTV Video Production Specialist, Brad Mowrey, will offer opportunities for more in-depth software training later this fall and winter. In the meantime, Final Cut 7 is still in use for some projects. We have also considered using the Adobe creative suite, discussion ongoing. Current Major Programming Initiatives  SCTV staff and volunteers are producing a music video set to the song “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang in honor of the Senior Center’s 35th anniversary in 2016. The song was a #1 hit in 1981, the same year the Senior Center opened. Our video involves hundreds of Senior Center members singing along or lip syncing to the song while participating in a variety of Senior Center activities, including dance, fitness, academics, music, and more. Editing is underway, and the video is set to premiere at our annual volunteer recognition event on September 29, after which it will be available on YouTube and included in monthly reels of SCTV programs.  The Senior Center and its intergenerational choir, the Family Folk Machine (FFM), received a grant from the Iowa Arts Council to support a community recollection and songwriting project called Wasn’t That a Time?, and Senior Center Television will help to document the project throughout the coming year. Members of the FFM ranging in age from 5 to 85 will gather life stories from their neighbors to use as inspiration for creating and sharing original songs. Local folk ensemble, the Awful Purdies, will assist the FFM throughout the project by teaching the group techniques for conducting story circles this fall and leading songwriting workshops with FFM members this winter. The project will culminate in a joint performance of original songs by the Family Folk Machine and Awful Purdies on the main stage of the Iowa Arts Festival in June 2017.   Date: August 18, 2016
