Activity Guide
2 Fall 2019 • Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department www.icgov.org/pr
General Information
Welcome Fall, 2019!
Table of Contents
It seems each summer passes faster and faster; all the more reason to make that commitment to get outdoors
to play. It is likely that if you are reading this, there is no need to convince you of the importance of play and
spending time outdoors. Children and adults alike benefit from increasing time spent outside in nature, grounding
themselves to the Earth, and finding their place in the universe. Inside this fall guide you will find many new
activities encouraging you to do just that; get outdoors, learn more about your environment, and foster love for
the Earth. All with a message of how you, too, can become a steward of land, water, and air. We are excited to offer
fun and interactive sessions to explore nature, including Night Hikes, a Fall Equinox Celebration, a bat house
workshop, and even a Junior Naturalist program. Other Nature Awareness and Outdoor Education programs
offered include making nature bracelets and headpieces, a study of worms, getting to know endangered species
such as the Blumer’s Fruit Bat or the Pangolin, and exploring fall edible fungi. Iowa City is proud of its many
spaces to explore nature. Our dedicated staff maintain over 50 beautiful parks, several of them with the purpose
of conserving nature-rich environments. Take some time to relax and discover the beauty of Hickory Hill Park and
discover a new passion for trees. Ryerson’s Woods and its impressive, centuries-old botany, as well as the sounds of
toads and frogs at Whispering Meadows Wetlands await
you. Spectacular displays of beautiful flowers bloom along the many trails and wetland areas at Waterworks Prairie
Park. Visit Riverfront Crossings and take advantage of the many trails, large nature play area, and the enhanced
Ralston Creek. Visit the Children’s Discovery Garden and check out our new Monarch-rearing tents. Enjoy the
aroma and taste of fresh, nutritious herbs. Learn how to plant a butterfly garden and how to make a bee house.
Wander through the Outdoor Edible Classroom on the south side of the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center and
harvest a vegetable or two.
You get the picture……
“Gather Here.” With us. Outside. Out – of – doors.
Hear the sweet music of the cicada or Iowa’s beautiful bird song, calling and drumming.
See the natural artistic expressions in the patterns of
Mother Earth.
Touch the coolness of the rocks in a babbling brook.
Smell the rain, the soil, the air.
Taste the fall Harvest.
“Gather Here” and Be Well,
Joyce Carroll,

Disc Golf Course
Peninsula Park
The Peninsula Park is home to a beautiful championship disc golf course that covers approximately 30 acres and is bounded by the Iowa River on three sides. This course, designed by Jeff Harper, a local professional disc golfer, offers a challenging layout that can be fun for all skill levels. Each hole has a short and a long tee, providing 36 different holes to play on any day. Mixing open holes with wooded ones, the course offers the challenge of throwing accurately, as well as grip-it-and-rip-it holes. The uniquely-shaped information board welcomes both recreational and professional players to the course and serves as the place to get scorecards, course maps, and information on local and regional tournaments.
No greens fees are required to play the course; bring your own discs. For further information on disc golf or local activities, see the Iowa City Disc Golf League’s website: http://iowadiscgolf.org.
Wetherby Park
Wetherby Park has a 9-hole, recreational course that is perfect for new players. Hole one starts just south of the main shelter. While there are currently no tee signs, disc golfers should have no trouble following the course using the hole numbers on the baskets. Because the park is wide open, it can be windy, which adds some challenge to the course.
