What you will need: • Paper plate or a sheet of paper • Marker or pen • Food to represent each lifecycle (note: there are several different types of food that can work): o EGG: marshmallow o CATERPILLAR: gummy worm candy, string bean, or peas arranged in a line o CHRYSALIS: green grape or small Tootsie Roll o BUTTERFLY: butterfly cracker, bowtie pasta, or two orange slices “back to back” Directions: Note: The above picture shows one example of how we can represent the butterfly lifecycle with food. There are lots of different types of food that work well for this activity. 1. On a clean paper plate or blank sheet of paper, use your marker or pen to write down the four lifecycle stages leaving room around each for food: a. “Egg” b. “Caterpillar” c. “Chrysalis” d. “Butterfly” 2. Add each food you have chosen to represent each lifecycle stage.
