Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in joining the Iowa City Police Department.
The Department has a history of working collaboratively with the
community to enhance the quality of life for our residents and visitors.
Serving the fifth largest city in Iowa, the Iowa City Police Department is
large enough to offer various opportunities for career advancement.
The Department provides the possibility to participate across multiple
specialty positions, including bicycle officer, detective, tactical officer,
plainclothes operations, crime scene investigator, peer-to-peer
support counselor, K-9 officer and many others.
Iowa City is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live, to
retire, and a top college town. As the home of the University of Iowa, there are several academic,
artistic, cultural, and athletic opportunities. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, a level
one trauma center and teaching hospital, is the premier medical facility in the region. The Iowa
City Community School District is the fifth-largest in the state with many top-ranked schools.
Law enforcement is at a critical point in time in this country. The community's response to the
death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has highlighted the need for change. Iowa City has taken a
proactive role in restructuring the police department to continuously improve how law
enforcement services are provided to the community. Now is a fantastic time to be part of
meaningful change that positively impacts Iowa City.
The City of Iowa City and the Police Department value diversity and are committed to creating an
inclusive and respectful environment for all employees. It is the City's policy to afford equal
employment opportunities for all employees and potential City employees. It is our goal to achieve
a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the diversity within our community. The
Department values professionalism and is one of only 10 Iowa law enforcement agencies
accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA). Our agency
focuses on employee development with a commitment to career enrichment and professional
advancement.
We are looking for dedicated and compassionate people with a strong sense of service to apply for
the Iowa City Police Department. We anticipate filling many open positions during this hiring
period. Thank you for your interest in considering our Department and this noble profession.
Sincerely,
Dustin Liston
