HomeMy WebLinkAboutMarch Late Handout - Houses into Homes CorrectionFrom:Salina McCarty & Lucy Barker To:Brianna Thul Subject:Correction Date:Thursday, March 24, 2022 10:05:44 AM Hi, Brianna, I’m not sure if this information can still get to commissioners or not, but in reviewing our application, I noticed I mistakenly pasted the same answer into two questions. Our intended answer to the question about City Steps is below. I understand if it is too late to correct our application for this evening’s meeting, but I thought I would try. Thank you, Lucy & Salina How does the project address the goals of City Steps 2025? As indicated in the CIty Steps Consolidated plan, the City is dedicated to providing services to those with low and very low income and to “at-risk children and youth, low-income families, persons/families experiencing homeless, persons/families threatened with homelessness, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.” We believe that beds, furniture, and other items like lamps, dishes, and pots and pans, are an integral part of shelter/housing. We have heard from recipients and referring social workers that an empty apartment feels like home only after it is filled with furniture. Evidence indicates that improved sleep quality produces decreases in stress, reductions in depression, improved mental health and decision-making, and better performance at school and at work. Research assistants have conducted 70 interviews with a sample of Houses into Homes recipients (delivered to in either 2020 or 2021). The results indicate that receiving beds and furniture from Houses into Homes contributes to an improved quality of life. A majority of recipients reported better sleep for them (74%) and their children (84%). Additionally, recipients reported a greater sense of feeling welcome in the community (47%) and an improved relationship with their children (49%). The results of the surveys indicate that there is significant benefit to the individuals served.
