In addition to describing a vision for the City’s future, the plan provides guidance on how to achieve that vision over time. District Plans like the Southwest District Plan are components of the Comprehensive Plan that focus on a specific geographic area. Changes may be made to these plans upon consideration by the Planning and Zoning Commission and approval by City Council. The City is updating a portion of the Southwest District Plan because in 2023, infrastructure will be extended to allow development south of Rohret Road and west of Highway 218. However, the current plan was adopted in 2002. A lot has changed since then, so the City wants to make sure the Plan aligns with the preferences, policies, and circumstances of today. How to Participate: The future of Iowa City is guided by the imagination, vision, and commitment of the people who live and work here. As a result, the City wants to hear your ideas for the future of this area. Input will be collected throughout the project, including these upcoming events: · Public Open House. On September 1 from 6:00 through 8:00 pm, the City will hold a public open house at Weber Elementary School to provide an opportunity to share its draft future land use vision and receive feedback about how the area may develop in the future. This is a drop-in event, so feel free to attend any time during the two hours to learn more about the project and provide feedback on the draft concept. · Public Review Draft. Once the future land use vision is finalized, a draft of the plan update will be published for review and comment. · Planning & Zoning Commission. The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the plan update where they will solicit public comment and make a recommendation to the City Council. · City Council. City Council will hold a public hearing and consider adoption of the plan update. The goal is for City Council to consider this document by the end of 2022. Additional Information: You can find all events, relevant plans, and documents produced as part of this update on the project website noted below, in addition to signing up for the project contact list.
