To Whom it May Concern,
I would like to be considered for the Iowa City
Airport Mural.
I grew up in Iowa City and I’ve been teaching in the
district for 22 years. I have been a painter for 25
years. I have done several large murals in private
residences over the years. My students and I have
done several large scale projects including a safety
mural on the side of the Coralville dam, the
Longfellow walking tunnel and a mural on the roof of
a Mercer park shelter.
I propose a mural design similar to this painting. It
would include several plants in the foreground with
shapes floating through the background.
Please consider my application for this project.
Sincerely,
Dr. Rachael Ayers-Arnone

Statement of Interest
Iowa City Airport Mural
11/11/14
I have been living in Iowa City ever since I went to the University of Iowa in 2007. I purchased my first house last
year. I fully intend for both of my children to grow up here, and for my wife and I to grow old here. I am proud to
be an artist from Iowa City, and would be truly honored to be able to paint this mural to show my love and
inspiration to my home.
My first official public mural was in downtown Pella, Iowa. It was a long mural spanning 100 feet, and I absolutely
loved painting it because I could play with different perspectives and add a variety of elements and features
throughout. The building was also not so tall that it needed to have a design with grid elements, and/or needed to be
projected. I am not opposed to those designs, but a building such as this means that I could apply my more unique
and painterly approach that I prefer to do.
My friend and art historian, Lorinda Bradley, and I worked with the City of Pella to approve a design inspired by the
17th Century Dutch landscape paintings. Through this inspiration, I found joy in painting large, fluffy clouds, and
have incorporated them in some of my other murals. I could see this interest lending very well with an airport mural.
My process of painting murals like this uses both acrylic paint and acrylic spray paint, which works effectively with
uneven surfaces and the metal ‘ribs’ mentioned in the Request for Qualifications document. I have been an art
teacher for eleven years, and have experience with large-scale projects involving many personalities and moving
parts. I am open to new ideas, welcome constructive feedback, and more than willing to adapt designs to fulfill the
purpose of the artwork. Lastly, being an Iowa City resident has its advantages for working with other people’s
schedules and weather complications.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

I am a Des Moines, Iowa native, multi-medium painter and muralist. After
studying multiple mediums of art at the Des Moines Art Center, I received
a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Entrepreneurship Certificate
from the University of Iowa. I worked as graphic designer focusing on
branding, creative direction and design production for 10 years which has
served me well for project management and client relations.
I have five years of experience as an professional artist painting over 40
murals throughout Iowa and have a strong understanding of bringing
this project’s goals and objectives to life. Each mural I create is a custom
collaboration and balance of the client’s needs and my artistic integrity
through consultation, sketching, design revisions and installation. I create
concepts that enliven spaces and serve community needs. As an advocate
for community pride, I find joy in bringing a sense of togetherness and
celebrating inclusion through art. I aim to demonstrate that public art
is an integral, powerful and experiential tool that unifies, energizes and
beautifies our communities while enhancing the cultural landscape.
The University of Iowa is my alma mater and Iowa City holds a special
place in my heart as I still frequent there each year. This project aligns
with my artistic values because I firmly believe that building equity in your
community can be achieved through art. This opportunity will also fulfill a
professional goal of mine to increase the large-scale of my work.
With a mission to make people happy through art, my work is often
inspired by collages of organic shapes found in nature with uplifting
themes using vibrant colors, florals, botanicals and lettering.

To whom it may concern;
I hope this letter finds you well, I am writing in regards to the mural opportunity at the Iowa City
Municipal Airport. I find this RFQ very intriguing as I have enjoyed researching and designing
murals with historical value. After doing my own research on the Iowa City Airport, I found a lot
of the history there to be very inspiring and I began having immediate visions of what I would
love to do for a mural and how it could really bring a lot of life and excitement to the southern
facade of the south hangar.
A little about myself; I am a full-time artist, designer, educator, muralist originally from Detroit, MI
and I just recently relocated to Kansas City, MO this past August. I have murals all across the
country for clients such as Whirlpool, The State of Michigan, Jeep, and The City of Toledo.
Some cities we have had the opportunity to paint are Miami, LA, San Antonio, KCMO, St Pete,
Chicago, and many more towns, cities, and villages in between and all over Ohio and Michigan.
Some of these murals are some of the largest in the area as well. Designing, planning, and
executing large scale murals is my expertise and something I pride myself on doing very well
and have gathered a large following on social media outlets.
I thank you for your time and the opportunity.
Sincerely,
Ken Dushane aka “Phybr”

To whom it may concern,
My name is Charlie Esker, I am a young, motivated artist from Cedar Rapids, Iow. When
I came across this opportunity to create a large mural for the Iowa City Airport, I immediately
knew I had to apply. I have the experience, ability, and creative vision to bring an unforgettable
mural to life.
I studied fine art at Iowa State University and have previously created and displayed large
format works of art – including a mural abroad in Costa Rica. While there, I had the opportunity
to collaborate with peers, professors, local artists, and a local business to create a 10’ by 50’
mural depicting abstract scenes from the surrounding environment. As a team, we worked
together to conceptualize, design, and execute this full scale mural for a local rock climbing
business. From the initial ideation phase through execution, we had to balance multiple
perspectives and reach a consensus, which gave me valuable experience and insight into the
iterative process of creating this type of artwork. In the end, we successfully brought the mural to
life in the span of just one semester, and the mural can be seen in my attached compendium of
past work.
In addition, my participation in the Octagon OUT exhibition earlier this year required me
to operate within thematic and budgetary constraints. Because this piece was displayed in the
Ames Public Library, I had to consider how the general public would receive and interact with
the work, which can also be seen in my compendium of past work.
These works, along with my art as a whole, are a celebration – queer, joyous, grand,
colorful, and eye-catching. I am confident my style would translate into this celebration of Iowa
City’s aviation history and be compatible with the donors’ vision and desire for this mural.
Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to discussing my possible
contribution to this project.
Best,
Charlie Esker

Hi Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee and the Iowa City Airport Commission teams,
My name is Britt, I am a visual artist and muralist based in North Carolina, and I am excited to
be submitting materials for consideration as the contributing mural artist to the gorgeous 300
ft blank canvas! I am an artist that is interested in providing work that evokes compassion,
connection, and wonder. I love public art, especially large scale painting, because of its
immersive nature and the immediate act of interaction it promotes. Much of my work aims to
visualize moments of awe, and I feel an urgency to bring moments of love to every day spaces,
to bring visual poetry to all, and to activate over looked spaces. I feel a strong responsibility as
a visual artist to uphold values of impact, purpose, and connection in my work. I love working
large scale because of the community interaction it encourages, and because of the large
potential to make a positive impact in someone's day. I'm interested in visualizing heightened
moments of realization like moments that impact us: when we fall in love, when we learn
something new, when we make a new friend, when we conquer depression, when we go for a
big goal, when we conquer a fear.
I have experience completing murals up to 80 ft in width and up to 40 ft in height and love
transforming unique spaces and abstract canvases in our communities. I am specifically
interested in this call as I have always wanted to contribute art at an airport as the public art
installations in airports I have been to ALWAYS make make smile and positively impact my
traveling day. I am also specifically interested in this call as I have yet to have the opportunity
to paint on such a large wall and would look forward to the challenge. I would look forward to
the opportunity to develop a bright, bold, whimsical design to this space for employees,
travelers, and visitors to enjoy every day for years to come. I had the pleasure of contributing a
large mural to Charles City, Iowa's "Town of Colors" mural project this summer and was
completely awe struck by Iowa's natural beauty. It would be an honor to attempt to capture its
beauty and aviation history. I love Montana brand, and would propose using the
Montana"BLACK" and "GOLD" spray paint editions. Much of my work is gestural, whimsical,
and aims to tug at your heart strings. I am a full time artist with 6 years of public art and mural
experience, and am comfortable with all aspects of project management of large scale mural
projects like ordering supplies, renting aerial lifts, and managing timelines and completion
dates. I am actively seeking large scale public art projects for 2023 and am available for this
project timeline. I would love the opportunity to collaborate with your team and to make magic
together for your community to experience and enjoy.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration, I'm excited for your feedback!
Best,
Britt Flood

I'm interested in providing moments of discovery,
connection, and positivity to our communities through
public art and placemaking. As a visual artist with a
growing list of public art clients and an x-Purchasing

Part 1 of 2 Airport Mural Submissions p. 67
My intent would be to create a historically relevant and timeless mural to greet drivers,
pilots, passengers, and pedestrians entering Iowa City. This would create an engaging
aesthetic that defines the community and its surroundings to highlight the Iowa City
Airport as well as its diverse historical significance of achievements throughout the
genesis of aviation and Iowa as a state.
Initially I am inspired to start doing research for photo references to collage about
Captain Thomas Baldwin, imagery of what was known as the Red Ball Highway,
Benjamin Dairy Farm along with how its informal use led to its conversion to an official,
government designated, air mail landing field in 1920. My mural would likely include a
depiction of the first piece of airmail departing Iowa City as a tiny ten pound pig bound
for Chicago. The other elements that I’ve initially thought about working with include;
some reference photos/ imagery of Transcontinental, Boeing, as well as some WWII
and US Navy depictions. I might also utilize some additional imagery representing
United Airlines, Ozark Airlines, architect Henry Fisk, and other relevant enterprises I find
through my research.
I love embarking on the adventure of researching these historical references and
studying the timeline during which they played a role: to collage together a visual story.
This begins as a digital mockup which I then use as a reference to paint imagery that
both subliminally and bluntly illustrates the story and journey a geographical location
went through. This will help the history of aviation in Iowa to be recognized in in the
community through the unique means that public art can provide. I plan to begin my in
depth research by looking into Iowa City Municipal Airport: Opening the West to
Aviation, 1918-2007. As this is only just the beginning of my study on the history I
would greatly appreciate and welcome any additional books or resources that you can
suggest or provide.
If I’m approved as one of the 3 artists I will dedicate my full time and energy to
developing this mural into the most descriptive and insightful piece I can which would
represent Iowa City, its history in aviation, and the complete story of the Iowa City
Airport. This project lands close to home for me, literally, as I grew up in Des Moines
and went to college in Iowa City proper. Since college I have been traveling the world
doing my art as far away as Germany and all throughout the East and West coast of
the US. I’ve also completed 3 different grant projects back in the city of Cedar Rapids,
IA; located in the New Bohemian and Czech Village districts.
I have recently painted a large 16ft-60 ft mural made of vertical metal ‘ribs’ spaced
every foot or so
and understand the techniques required to deal with how it effects the mural 2
dimensionally.

Sirus Fountain is a multidisciplinary artist, whose work has ranged from murals, street
art, printmaking, illustration, sculpture, construction, experimental filmmaking to sound
design.
However, predominantly he has been recognized for his focus in public art and murals,
which can be seen throughout many major cities in the United States and Europe.
Most of these creations share a dark, mysterious and cryptic nature, while
simultaneously revealing great power and emotion. There is a strong feeling of a
personal pilgrimage these characters are on, seeming to be set off through reflection,
introspection and examination.

Letter Of Interest

Ms.Wendy Ford
Economic Development
Dear Ms. Ford,
I am writing to you to express my interest in the having the opportunity to design and paint a
mural at the Iowa City Municipal Airport. I love creating and painting large scale projects as well
as expanding my artistic abilities and skills, so this project has more than peeked my interest. I
have painted much taller structures, but never one this long before, so the challenge is very
inviting!
I have worked on several public and private murals in the past. My largest project to date stands
at 2,000 sq feet in the town of Oxford, IA, commissioned by the Oxford Masonic Lodge. For this
particular project, we spent over a year in discussions, emails, and face to face meetings to
address design concepts, time, changes, and to manage everything on a very tight budget. I have
also painted smaller scale murals inside private homes and public buildings, such as, Clear Creek
Elementary School and The Oxford Public Library. As a teen I worked on a group mural for the
town of Webster City, IA that is still on display nearly 25 years later. Each project I have
completed has all had their own unique themes, locations, and challenges. All of which I welcome,
as painting and designing are my favorite forms of expression.
Open communication, design discussion, and input from both donors and the community are fully
expected, welcomed, and appreciated during every public art project as customer and public
satisfaction are a number one goal. I enjoy incorporating all types of ideas into a common theme
as well as maintaining my own artist style to create incredible colorful designs. I am extremely
budget conscious with both materials and time management throughout every step. Maintaining a
realistic time frame and design are a top priority, as well as keeping the environment safe for both
myself and the public during the painting process. Although I am primarily a solo artist, I am also
not opposed to collaborating with other artists.
I am eager to participate in more public murals and art projects and hope you will grant me the
honor to design a concept for you!
Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

To whom it may concern with The Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee and the Iowa City Airport
Commission:
I am writing to express my interest in the Iowa City Airport Mural Project. I feel that I am uniquely qualified
for this project based on my extensive professional experience in creating art for public spaces and passion
for enriching people’s lives through art.
Throughout my career, I have created public art on a local, national, and international scale, working with
organizations that include the Milwaukee Bucks, Orvis, the Green Bay Packers, American Express and
the Toronto Blue Jays, to name a few. Last year, I completed a 120’ x 80’ wall in Schlitz Park, now the
largest mural in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in partnership with Crestlight Capital, Schlitz Park, and the City of
Milwaukee. I have vast knowledge and experience working through the concept-to-completion process,
with steps that include preliminary design, concept feedback and collaboration, timeline management,
installation logistics, and project execution. I am comfortable working with ambiguity and adversity – like the
ability and willingness to work with donors for inclusion of additional aviation elements that you mentioned –
and approach each project with the goal of creating art and experiences that move people.
In your RFQ, I connected with the idea that the mural should showcase the storied history of aviation
in Iowa City. I especially love the idea of conceptually linking to the airport’s past, present and future,
celebrating all the dynamism since Captain Thomas Baldwin made the first flight over Iowa City. Reflecting
on the past and making narratives about the future is a strong through line in all of my artwork.
If selected, you can rest assured that I would use my creativity, tireless work ethic, collaboration and
problem-solving skills to bring to life a vibrant public art piece that will greet drivers, pilots, passengers
and pedestrians as well as provide a visual cue about the history, activities and highlights of the Iowa City
Airport. I appreciate your consideration.
Sincerely,
Greg Gossel

Statement of InterestNovember 14, 2022
To whom this concerns,
My name is Amanda (Mandy) Grotewold. My mother and I have been painting
murals for a few years now and are very interested in this opportunity to design and
paint a mural for the Iowa City Airport. I understand that the goal of this project is to
mark the aviation history of Iowa, specific to Iowa City, as well as to create a work of art
that is eye-catching and reflective of the beauty that resides in the great state of Iowa. I
understand that we will be working with a committee and donors interested in this
project. This mural interests me as I have so enjoyed using my gifts to create scenes
that invite others to experience them with me. There is something about paintings that
helps to brings joy and color to individuals who encounter them. In all the murals I have
created I have partnered with my mom, which not only brings so much joy to me, but
also paints a picture, if you will, of a healthy family bond between a mother and
daughter. To be able to represent this as well as our artwork is something I am
extremely grateful for.
We both enjoy taking on new challenges and projects as well as hearing from locals
how much they enjoy watching the process of a mural come together. We have seen
people unite from all different races, sexes, and ages in the communities that we have
had the privilege to paint in.
From a personal perspective, this project interests me because during COVID
2019 I had lost my job due to a shutdown happening in the city I was residing in.
Staying at home for two weeks with no work I prayed and asked God what I should do. I
was directed to painting. For those two weeks I painted over fourteen canvases, but
would always tell my husband, “I feel like I just need a bigger canvas, like the size of a
wall!” A couple days later I received a phone call from my mom that there was a city
council member from Webster City that had asked if I wanted to design a large mural for
them…the size of a wall. With that we began branching out and creating murals and it
has given me so much life. Because of this small step of faith I am now able to share
the beauty that I have inside my heart with the world.
Part 1 of 2 Airport Mural Submissions p. 99
Together, my mom and I have had previous experience on a number of murals
for cities and small towns around Iowa including exterior murals in Webster city Iowa,
one commemorating plants and wildlife native to Iowa as well as the Annual Monarch
Migration Trail, and another memorial mural, paying respects to a well known female
entrepreneur in the city. We have also worked with many individuals to create personal
murals in their own homes, painted murals for elementary school students and the
school board, and have partnered with organizations such as the Rotary Club, the
American Legion, and projects run by city councils to help improve aging small towns in
Iowa.
My mom and I do not have much experience working with a structured committee
or agency for concept development such as those we would be working with for the
airport project, however, we have learned much from the projects we have completed
along the way and how to work with different groups of people and city councils.
Together we have worked with the Jewell, IA city council and the council for city
improvement on creating a design and seeking approval of those designs and plans.
We also have worked directly with professionals to get permission from school boards
for the projects painted in the Northeast Hamilton Elementary School. In Webster City
we mainly worked one on one with Kevin Rubash who sits on the board for city
improvement in Webster City to work with board members of the city and donors from
the Rotary Club of Webster City, Iowa to agree on plans and designs for a memorial
mural. With these experiences we have learned how to work with our clients and how to
create visuals for them that they desire to have in a mural.
Whether or not we are considered to help with this project, I am grateful for the
opportunity and that communities are reaching out first to local artists to help them grow
their dreams and gifts as well as bring color and life to our communities. Thank you.

Military Residents of Hilcrest Home's Grand Lodge
We painted a mural for the military residents of a retirement home and had meetings to hear
about the images they thought would be best for the project. The images included aircraft,
ships and tanks. Uniforms and medals were displayed as well.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST FOR CREATING A MURAL ON THE IOWA CITY AIRPORT
Dear Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee and the Iowa City Airport Commission,
It is with great pleasure that I submit my qualifications to paint a mural on the Iowa City Airport. The opportunity you have created to
add beauty to your airport will impact your community for years to come. I would love to be the artist to help make your vision come to
life.
1.My father served on an aircraft carrier, and loved being so close to those powerful machines as they took off and landed. His stories
must have sparked my imagination, because as a child I was obsessed with sketching anything that had to do with flight. That feeling
never left me. I have now done a number of murals on aviation themes. One of them was a 1% for Art commission for the Central
Nebraska Veterans Home, a mural on various walls, and angled planes, wrapping around a hearth room. In the mural, I painted a
biplane pulling a yellow ribbon across picturesque scenes of Nebraska, finally wrapping around an oak tree. Another aviation related
commission was for the teams who maintain and staff the 5 aircraft that can function as a “flying pentagon,” the 595th Aircraft
Maintenance Squad and the 595th Command and Control group on the Offutt Air Force base. That mural included 10 images of aircraft
and the people who work on them. After completing it, the commander of the squad presented me with a coin, signifying service that
was “above and beyond expectations.”
I still get excited at the opportunity to paint historic aircraft, with lofty clouds, catching sunset colors, and aerial views of midwestern
landscapes, filled with patchwork patterns of fields and towns. I love Grant Wood, and his depictions of the unique hills of Iowa made
his work incredible. It would be fun to paint those fields from a bird’s eye view. I visit close friends in Iowa City regularly, and I was
surprised to learn its airport has such an amazing history. I would love to bring those stories to life on a grand mural project.
2.For 40 years I have been all about creating large scale artwork, for churches, businesses, theater and the public. My company, A
Midsummer’s Mural has received awards of excellence from Omaha’s Mayor, Nebraska’s Governor and by our state’s legislature for
several public projects, including an official Sesquicentennial Nebraska Legacy Project mural. We have also created murals illustrating
the 138-year history of South Omaha and the 160-year history of the Omaha Public Schools. We’ve painted 13 murals about historic
communities. We feel that the process of collecting a community’s stories, and helping them to express their values and hopes for the
future, is just as important as the artwork we end up creating, if not more so. Bringing people together to focus on these things helps
them build bridges, and define their values. The magic in the story sharing becomes the beauty of the murals. We work hard to
document the symbols and preserve each story on brochures, signs, and websites so that people will remember them for years to
come.
In addition, I prioritize good craftsmanship, use quality materials, prioritize careful workspaces, and carry full liability and workman’s
compensation insurance to back up those concerns.
3.While working on the Central Nebraska Veterans Home mural, I had an agreed upon design of a biplane pulling a yellow ribbon
through the landscape. And I had the images mostly finished, when several veterans expressed the desire to have more modern aircraft
replace the biplane. I did include their preferred aircraft, and was happy to do so. We found the perfect placement on a different wall,
and we kept our nostalgic biplane pulling the yellow ribbon. I believe that listening to all the stakeholders, and finding third alternatives
that work well for everyone is extremely important.
4.We have logged more than 110 meetings with South Omaha’s unique ethnic neighborhoods and many more with public-school
administrators, church leaders, and business owners. Each commission is a new experience with similar challenges. We enjoy meeting
with each new group. Those planning meetings, and how we work together on developing designs, are at the core of what we do.
I look forward to answering any questions you may have,
