Iowa City Senior Center — Kitchen Renovation
1 OF 10
The kitchen design for the Senior Center building was built upon meengs with staff, engineers, and
architects. Site visits and one-on-one conversaon s informed and inspired the design, which was driven by
the overall objecve of supporng wellness, social connecons, community engagement, and lifelong
learning.
The beauful, historical building has an opportunity to open the kitchen to create a flexible space, available
for teaching large and small classes, hosng events, providing community work spaces, etc. Addionally, th e
kitchen can be a springboard for local business owners as an incubator/ghost kitchen, while also generang
revenue for the Senior Center. This renovaon will take a segmented, stagnate space and bring in new life
and revitalizaon.
The intent of this proposal was to idenfy possible design soluons and renovaon priories, while bein g
mindful of demolion, construcon and budgetary impl icaons thereof. Being mindful of ergonomics, ADA,
WELL, and energy efferent ideas, the design is intended to create an inving, comfortable and highly
funconal space. The ideas shown are intended to o ffer flexibility, mulpurpose funconality and room for
future growth and use within the kitchen.
The following pages breakdown the kitchen into different zones, walking through exisng condions vs the
proposed design changes.
