Statement of Interest
Justin Scroggins
I am excited about this opportunity because it allows myself and others to contemplate topics
such as connectivity/communication, sculptural design, and historic/environmental impacts.
Living and growing up in the midwest has taught me the importance of relationships. Creating a
bus stop bench screams connectivity and shouts communication. Not only does this bench
physically represent a destination of commute, as a sculptural object, it inspires a dialog and
connection beyond the geographic.
In addition to the ideas surrounding connection, the formal qualities of this bench are also
intriguing. Just as this piece needs to function as an inviting place for respite it also embodies
the standard elements found in a public sculpture. Sculptures of this type remain ever changing
based on unique individuals' interaction, time of year, and natural wear/tear. My sculpture will
aim to emphasize this and explore space relating to the body and the area surrounding the
bench.
Representationally, I am interested in exploring historic and prehistoric concepts within this
project. Specifically, I am intrigued by what was here before Iowa City and possibly what was
here before that! Additionally, concepts relating to our interaction with the environment around
us is also something I would like to explore. Most importantly, I am interested in discussing with
the public and the mentor to gain perspectives when choosing the final concepts.
Overall, I am interested in this opportunity because of its capabilities. Creating this bench has
the potential to inspire connection, share ideas about the history of where we live, and ask
questions around what functional art can be. I am eager to work with the mentor towards such
an exciting project. Thank you for your time and consideration.
