This area is of a special interest for me as I lived and grew up in the South District on Bancroft Drive from birth until the age of 13 when I left in about 2001. It’s been many years, but I still vividly remember my neighborhood and the other kids I hung out with, jumping fences and chasing each other from yard to yard. I remember playing capture the flag at Weatherby Park and riding our bikes to the Sycamore Mall only to be reprimanded in Bonnie’s Toys for being too rambunctious. I remember taking the bus with the neighborhood kids downtown for even more shenanigans. I was well acquainted with the route as my mother was a graduate student at the time and depended on the bus system to get to and from class. It is for these reasons that I was drawn to this project, particularly because of its association with the South District. It feels rather nostalgic to me and appropriate to return to the district that was so impactful on my childhood and youth, but also to specifically work on a bus stop bench— the mode of transportation that is so crucial for so many of its residents, including my family back then. I was also drawn to the project because I was a participant in 2021’s BenchMarks art project in downtown Iowa City as well, so I am already acquainted with process for painting a bench and would love nothing more than to contribute another bench to the city. I am a small, local artist whose primary medium is in acrylic painting and I am eager to expand my work from canvas to bigger projects. I thank you for your consideration and look forward to hearing from you soon. Best, Stanzy Scheetz
