As a working 3D artist and instructor based in Iowa City, IA that is researching
environmental sustainability and arts accessibility,I am excited about the opportunity to work
with the city of Iowa City to create an artistic bus stop that provides a necessary community
need.I am a current graduate student at the University of Iowa in the Sculpture & Intermedia
department. I have received my Master of Arts certificate and will be attending the university in
2023-2024 to obtain my Master of Fine Arts degree, and though I appreciate the time and
space to realize my large-scale, site-specific sculptural installations, I would be grateful for the
opportunity of this project to create work outside of the rigors of academia.
My past work has prepared me for this opportunity through creating sculptures publicly
exhibited in Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska, and Minnesota, as well as installing outdoor
sculptures at Josephine Sculpture Park in Frankfort, KY; Sculpture Trails Outdoor Museum in
Solsberry, IN; and Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, MN. At the university, I have created
site-specific, interactive sculptural installations including ‘Tipping Fee,’ a collection of furniture
exhibited in the Visual Arts Building Atrium for two weeks. After the exhibition, all of the
furniture was donated back into the community from a free auction or repurposed by myself as
materials for new sculptures. This year, I became a member of the Graduate Engagement
Corps at the University of Iowa, and I have worked with community partners such as Open
Heartland, which aids community members and struggling families with household goods and
services. I have also established partnerships with Jane Welch of the Iowa City Landfill and
Recycling Center, the Salvage Barn for loaning antique and historical household items, and the
local Habitat for Humanity with donations of objects after exhibitions. I am excited about the
possibility of working with the South District Neighborhood Association, the Iowa City Public
Art Advisory Committee, and my Project Mentor to fully realize the new bus stop bench.
Through my past two years of living in Iowa City, I have thoroughly enjoyed the
welcoming environment, appreciation for art throughout the city, and the many community
organizations dedicated to providing for all of Iowa City’s residents. I intend to forge as many
relationships with local community organizations as I can to better understand community
needs and goals that can be translated into my proposed installation. As an outsider to the
area, I understand that it will take time to earn the trust required for effectively working with the
community, but I plan to spend any free time outside of the studio with community members
and am looking forward to the neighborhood meeting process to involve public input in the
design and development of the bus stop bench.
Overall, I am thoroughly excited to learn more about the South District, community
needs, and how to best highlight the neighborhood’s rich history and culture. I am ready and
eager for the opportunity to design and facilitate the new bus stop bench in the South District.
Thank you for your time and consideration of my application.
