This document pro- vides an overview of the City’s application and Civil Service testing process. Additional information and updates will be posted to the Firefighter recruitment website listed above. Job Summary A Firefighter responds to alarms of fire and other emergencies with a pumper, ladder or rescue com- pany utilizing a variety of equipment and techniques to suppress fires. Removes persons from dan- ger and administers emergency medical care as outlined in the scope of practice pertaining to an Emergency Medical Technician. Responds to a variety of calls of an emergency nature requiring the performance of light to heavy-duty rescue activities such as administering oxygen, performing CPR, and operating various equipment used in rescue operations. Participates in fire drills, attends regular in-house meetings on firefighting, emergency medical care, technical rescue, fire prevention, equip- ment maintenance and related subjects. Attends required training. Performs fire prevention inspec- tions and may perform public education duties. Performs general maintenance and cleaning work in the upkeep of departmental apparatus, equipment, furnishings and structures. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Job Qualifications • 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. • High school diploma or equivalent required. • Vision of 20/30 in each eye, corrected or uncorrected, with normal color vision. • No more than 25-decibel hearing loss in either ear in 3 of 4 frequencies (500, 1000, 2000, 3000 Hz) OR no more than 30-decibel hearing loss in any one of three frequencies (500, 1000, 2000 Hz) and average loss of not greater than 30-decibels in all four frequencies. • Ability to speak, read and write the English language. • Valid Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required upon hire. • EMT-B and Firefighter I certification preferred, required within 1 year. • Must pass criminal background check. Application and Testing Requirements Application Process Candidates must apply online by the announced deadline. A résumé will not substitute for the required online application. All passing candidates will be eligible to participate in the physi- cal fitness test. Physical Fitness Test The physical fitness test is required for all candidates passing the written test. Oral Interview and Certification of hiring list All candidates passing both the written test and physical fitness test will be eligible for an interview. Following interviews the hiring team will recommend a rank order list to the Civil Service Commission for certification. This certified list will be used by the Chief to fill future vacancies until a new recruitment process is authorized by the Civil Service Commission. Please visit www.icgov.org/joinicfd for detailed information on the written test and physical fitness test. Veteran’s Preference Iowa Code allows for Veteran’s Preference under certain conditions. To be eligible you must meet all of the following requirements: 1. Must be a citizen and a current resident of the U.S. 2. Must have received an honorable discharge, as stated on a DD214 or other official discharge document. 3. Must have served active duty time during one of the following times: a. World War II between December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946 b. Korean Conflict between June 25, 1950 and January 31, 1955 c. Vietnam Conflict between August 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975 d. Lebanon or Grenada service between August 24, 1982 and July 31, 1984 e. Panama service between December 20, 1989 and January 31, 1990 d. Persian Gulf Conflict beginning August 2, 1990-present If you meet all of the above criteria and wish to claim veteran’s preference, you must submit a copy of your DD214 or other official discharge document which includes dates of active service and indicates honorable discharge by the announced deadline.
