Preliminary Minutes June 15, 2023 MINUTES SENIOR CENTER COMMISSION June 15, 2023 Assembly Room, Iowa City Senior Center Members Present: Angela McConville, Susan Mellecker, Lee McKnight, Warren Paris, Jay Gilchrist Members Absent: Tasha Lard, Nancy Ostrognai Staff Present: Kristin Kromray, LaTasha DeLoach Others Present: CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by McConville at 4:00 PM. RECOMMENDATIONS TO COUNCIL: None. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM THE MAY 18, 2023 MEETING: Motion: To accept the minutes from the May 18, 2023. Motion carried on a vote of 5/0. McKnight/Gilchrist PUBLIC DISCUSSION: None. OPERATIONAL OVERVIEW: DeLoach reported she organized the first Elders of Color meeting. They are planning to meet monthly. The goal is to have BIPOC older adults brainstorm programming ideas and share community. She mentioned Commissioner Gilchrist is starting a Wisdom Circle. One idea would be to have representatives from the Elders of Color and Queer Elders group be a part of the Wisdom Circle group. DeLoach noted a new volunteer program called Senior Center Ambassadors. Ambassadors will give tours and be a resource in the building. McConville asked how many Senior Centers are in Iowa. DeLoach was unsure of the total number but noted a few of the larger ones. Gilcrest mentioned Cedar Rapids is moving towards having an intergenerational recreation center. Preliminary Minutes June 15, 2023 DeLoach reported Johnson County has put the Senior Center on a service agreement instead of a quality -of -life grant. The Senior Center is anticipating receiving around $60,000 from this funding. DeLoach noted she is looking for additional funding sources. She is exploring the possibility of having night and weekend hours. She noted staff is working to see if Silver Sneakers is an option for the Senior Center. Silver Sneakers is a health insurance benefit through specific insurances. The contract is being reviewed. The Senior Center currently partners with United Health care for their similar benefit, Renew Acitve. Friends of the Iowa City Center is going to have a Pickleball tournament fundraiser in September. DeLoach invited commissioners to become involved with this event. COMMISSION DISCUSSION: Commissioners discussed the timeline of the exterior and interior projects. Gilchrist asked about environmentally friendly ways to offset the buildings climate footprint such as a roof top garden. DeLoach said she would ask about this. She noted that solar panels had been discussed in the past and they are too heavy for the building, so any solar would have to be offsite. McKnight asked about the recent air conditioning repair. DeLoach stated it had gone smoothly. Commissioners discussed the kitchen remodel and the possibilities related to it. Paris stated he appreciated the Open House. Suggestions for next month are to discuss sustainable building ideas. Meeting Adjourned. Their talk turned to concerns about aging and the difficulty o older homes. What can we do to maintain our independence and of wondered, and wh❑ can we rope into helping us? (Not her real name) Madeline was a member fr when she died. She had been a loyal UI Women's Basketb{ before it became popular - and needed a lot of TRAIL volua especially, in the last two years of her life. one volunteer old woman, became a regular support for Madeline..and tf to UI Women's Basketball games together. A few months l passing, she requested of TRAIL a ride every day for 6 wee oxygen treatments. We managed to schedule all these tre weeks, and Madeline was very relieved. This is just one of literally thousands of examples of the w preserves independence and helps people. Supported Memberships Beginning in 2022, TRAIL began a program called "Suppor Memberships". Based on a sliding fee scale related to ArE Income (AMI), this reduced the cost of belonging to TRAIL income of new members. Currently, we have 30 Supported Members, and we now, 1 for everyone, offer free memberships to any household m $34,0401year or less, and every individual making $32,00( Because Supported Members tend to have smaller socialls and often request more services, from the Community Foundation helps TRAIL afford this program, by regular memberships. we limiting this to 30 pE of Johnson County and N but much of the revenue Life Transitions In late 2021, two members of TRAIL, Joy Smith and NlaggiE a new program of TRAIL - Life Transitions. This program now includes the contract hiring of Kaleigh C Worker at Oaknoll for case management support. We proN training to six TRAIL volunteers, who provide extra suppor members who are going through any number of transitions This has also led us to having presentations from Heritage Ar Aging, the Visiting Nurse Association, and to our assisting me with connecting with these groups and other resources.
