CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by McConville at 4:00 PM.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO COUNCIL:
None.

Motion: To accept the minutes from the May 18, 2023. Motion carried on a
vote of 5/0. McKnight/Gilchrist
PUBLIC DISCUSSION:
None.
OPERATIONAL OVERVIEW:
DeLoach reported she organized the first Elders of Color meeting. They are
planning to meet monthly. The goal is to have BIPOC older adults brainstorm
programming ideas and share community. She mentioned Commissioner
Gilchrist is starting a Wisdom Circle. One idea would be to have representatives
from the Elders of Color and Queer Elders group be a part of the Wisdom Circle
group. DeLoach noted a new volunteer program called Senior Center
Ambassadors. Ambassadors will give tours and be a resource in the building.
McConville asked how many Senior Centers are in Iowa. DeLoach was unsure of
the total number but noted a few of the larger ones. Gilcrest mentioned Cedar
Rapids is moving towards having an intergenerational recreation center.
Preliminary Minutes
June 15, 2023
DeLoach reported Johnson County has put the Senior Center on a service
agreement instead of a quality -of -life grant. The Senior Center is anticipating
receiving around $60,000 from this funding. DeLoach noted she is looking for
additional funding sources. She is exploring the possibility of having night and
weekend hours. She noted staff is working to see if Silver Sneakers is an option
for the Senior Center. Silver Sneakers is a health insurance benefit through
specific insurances. The contract is being reviewed. The Senior Center currently
partners with United Health care for their similar benefit, Renew Acitve.
Friends of the Iowa City Center is going to have a Pickleball tournament
fundraiser in September. DeLoach invited commissioners to become involved
with this event.
COMMISSION DISCUSSION:
Commissioners discussed the timeline of the exterior and interior projects.
Gilchrist asked about environmentally friendly ways to offset the buildings climate
footprint such as a roof top garden. DeLoach said she would ask about this. She
noted that solar panels had been discussed in the past and they are too heavy
for the building, so any solar would have to be offsite.
McKnight asked about the recent air conditioning repair. DeLoach stated it had
gone smoothly.
Commissioners discussed the kitchen remodel and the possibilities related to it.
Paris stated he appreciated the Open House.
Suggestions for next month are to discuss sustainable building ideas.
Meeting Adjourned.

A bit of TRAI L's `Origin Story'
Once upon a time, four good friends of a certain age, all living withii
another in Iowa City's historic Northside neighborhood, gathered or
night. Their talk turned to concerns about aging and the difficulty o
older homes. What can we do to maintain our independence and of
wondered, and wh❑ can we rope into helping us?
Their numbers grew as they researched this question, and eventual

One quick story
Madeline. (Not her real name) Madeline was a member fr
when she died. She had been a loyal UI Women's Basketb{
before it became popular - and needed a lot of TRAIL volua
especially, in the last two years of her life. one volunteer
old woman, became a regular support for Madeline..and tf
to UI Women's Basketball games together. A few months l
passing, she requested of TRAIL a ride every day for 6 wee
oxygen treatments. We managed to schedule all these tre
weeks, and Madeline was very relieved.
This is just one of literally thousands of examples of the w

Supported Memberships
Beginning in 2022, TRAIL began a program called "Suppor
Memberships". Based on a sliding fee scale related to ArE
Income (AMI), this reduced the cost of belonging to TRAIL
income of new members.
Currently, we have 30 Supported Members, and we now, 1
for everyone, offer free memberships to any household m
$34,0401year or less, and every individual making $32,00(

Life Transitions
In late 2021, two members of TRAIL, Joy Smith and NlaggiE
a new program of TRAIL - Life Transitions.
This program now includes the contract hiring of Kaleigh C
Worker at Oaknoll for case management support. We proN
training to six TRAIL volunteers, who provide extra suppor
members who are going through any number of transitions
This has also led us to having presentations from Heritage Ar
Aging, the Visiting Nurse Association, and to our assisting me
with connecting with these groups and other resources. Thi!
intensive volunteering than we've done in the past, but it is
members and participating volunteers.
