HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWII - PoolsUpdated: February 2025 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Maintenance Worker II – Pools Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Government Buildings Supervisor: Facilities Manager FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 5 Job Number: 0510 Job Summary Under general direction, performs all aspects of maintenance, security and cleaning duties of buildings and grounds in various city facilities. The primary focus of this position is the maintenance and repair of aquatics systems and mechanical and plumbing systems within swimming pools and splash pads. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Performs backwashing on pool filtration systems; inspects and repairs system as needed. Helps coordinate assistance for annual pool maintenance; vacuums pools and adds chemicals to pool water as needed. • Inspects automatic chemical delivery system chemical level, adds chemicals as needed; inspects, cleans and repairs system. • Monitors water chemistry and makes corrections as needed either manually or via computerized controller systems. • Cleans all areas of assigned buildings, sweeps, mops, vacuums, and waxes floors. • Washes windows and lockers, cleans restrooms and empties trash. • Monitors and conducts minor repair to the digital heating, ventilation and air conditioning, boiler, electrical, and plumbing. • Paints, caulks, replaces ceiling tile, replaces filters, and unloads trucks. • Maintains records of work activities and reports the need for other repairs. • Maintains surrounding walks and grounds; assists with snow removal work and grass mowing. • Cleans swimming pool decks and makes repairs to shower areas as needed. • Works with contractors in construction, remodeling and maintenance of assigned buildings. • Orders hardware and cleaning supplies for Recreation facilities and maintains adequate inventory. • Schedules needed work. • May be requested to answer calls and respond. • Performs duties in a safe manner and participates in safety training. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in building maintenance, including general plumbing, heating, electrical or mechanical maintenance. • Certified Pool Operator Certification or Aquatic Facilities Operator. Automated external defibrillator, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid certified within six months of hire. Valid State of Iowa driver's license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass a background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and take measurements. • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. • Ability to read and understand work orders, recreation rules, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, and maintain written job records. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. • Knowledge of custodial materials and equipment. • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in a public building. • Skill in the operation of various cleaning equipment including pool vacuums, floor scrubbers and wet vacuums, transfer pumps, lawn mowers, and snow blower. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Outlook and Cartegraph).
