Position Title: Maintenance Worker III – Refuse

Job Summary
Maintains inventory of refuse stickers, trash, recycling bins, organics and building maintenance
supplies. Operates solid waste and/or recycle or yard waste collection truck on all collection
routes to collect solid waste, yard waste and recyclables. Performs routine maintenance to
vehicle. Runs bulky item pick-up routes and special routes during move-out, delivers and repairs
carts.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Assists the Assistant Superintendent – Refuse with documentation.
• Plans route, drives and operates any and all equipment used in daily solid waste
collection from pickup to delivery at disposal site.
• Collects household solid waste, recyclables, yard waste, Christmas trees and wreaths on
routes and transports to disposal site.
• Ensures truck is operating properly; performs routine maintenance; cleans vehicle and
equipment; maintains all fluid levels.
• Maintains adequate inventory of yard waste bags, refuse stickers, recycling bins and
building maintenance supplies.
• Assists Assistant Superintendent – Refuse during rental property turnover to ensure
proper notification to property owners; assists with proper documentation to ensure
collection of invoices to property owners.
• Repairs or replaces damaged tipper carts.
• Operates white goods collection.
• Performs daily vehicle walk-around for safety and vehicle maintenance check.
• Ensures that safety protocols and procedures are being followed.
• Documents and enforces collection rules with the public.
• Inventories and delivers recycling supplies and yard waste supplies to businesses.
• Picks up dead animals.
• Picks up bulky items and drops them off at the Landfill.
• Delivers bins and carts to homes and businesses.
• Maintains and cleans office.

• Assists in scheduling the work of Refuse employees.
• Serves as lead Maintenance Worker in the absence of the Assistant Superintendent –
Refuse.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience
driving a truck or related.
• Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction
permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license
with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug testing
requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must
pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience. Experience in solid waste operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in
written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situations.
• Ability to follow verbal and written orders.
• Ability to interface positively with staff and customers.
• Ability to operate recycling and fully automated garbage trucks, including driving on the
opposite side and following special safety precautions.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to read and understand maps and street signs.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to write and complete daily time sheets.
• Knowledge of solid waste regulations.
• Knowledge of street locations and general City geography.
• Skill in driving a truck.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving
mechanical parts, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic

is regularly exposed to outside weather condition, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen,
insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Involves
moderate exposure to dangerous situations. Involves moderate exposure to stress due to the
work environment and/or crisis situations.
