The treatment process removes about 80% of the hardness, changing very hard water into soft water. While water hardness is not a health concern, some homeowners in Iowa City choose to further reduce water hardness by using a home water softening unit. Signs of hard water in your home include: soap scum on bathtubs, shower tiles, and basins, and a white ring in the kettle after boiling water. Did you know? 6 Iowa City tap water has an average of 50 mg/L as CaCO3 of total hardness. 6 A gallon of Iowa City tap water costs less than one penny for an average residential customer. 6 Iowa City tap water is non-corrosive, helping to prolong the life of your plumbing and fixtures. Parking rates to increase starting July 1 On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, the Iowa City Council approved an increase in rates for street parking and parking ramps for the first time since 2013. This comes as maintenance costs for parking facilities have increased siginficantly, and the current revenue from parking fees covers only 22% of the Parking Division’s budget. Summary of changes Street parking will be $3/hour in the Central Business District (CBD), up from $1.50. Parking outside the CBD will be $1.50/hour. Ramp parking will be $2/hour, up from $1. First-hour free parking will remain and be added to Chauncey Swan Ramp and Harrison Street Ramp, which previously did not offer this discount. Subsequent offenses will increase to $10, $15, $20, $30, and $40, up from $7, $12, $15, $20, and $25 respectively. Commercial loading zone parking: First offense will remain $25.
