HomeMy WebLinkAboutCivilian Crime AnalystUpdated: June 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Civilian Crime Analyst Department: Police Division: Support Services Supervisor: Captain of Support Services FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 12 Job Number: 28 Job Summary Under general direc�on, uses a variety of law enforcement related data, including computer-aided dispatch, police reports, and mapping to iden�fy trends to address current issues rela�ng to policing. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following du�es are normal for this posi�on. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all- inclusive. Other du�es may be required and assigned. • Iden�fies �mes and areas where crimes are being commited to help guide proac�ve policing. • Develops and aggregates intelligence to advise police leadership. • Provides presenta�ons on research and analysis to police department and city staff. • Inves�gates and iden�fies data points not currently captured that would be beneficial to the department. • Work s with all levels of the police department on data collec�on requests and reports. • Reviews and recommends so�ware and technology related to the collec�on of data. • Researches, compiles, analyzes, and interprets sta�s�cal data from the police department and outside agency reports. • Analyzes criminal intelligence informa�on and prepares intelligence reports. • Collects criminal intelligence informa�on from a variety of sources. • Serves as a departmental liaison with other law enforcement agencies on criminal intelligence. • Coordinates the exchange of interstate and intrastate informa�on pertaining to criminal ac�vity and criminal movement. • Establishes a network of internal and external sources and contacts in iden�fying criminal trends and conduc�ng intelligence analysis. • Creates and maintains up-to -date computer databases and files on the crimes, criminals, and criminal organiza�ons. • Researches paterns, structures, trends, and movements of criminal groups or individuals and develops recommenda�ons for subsequent inves�ga�on. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Updated: June 2024 Minimum Educa�on, Experience, Cer�fica�on/Licensure, Other • Associate of Arts degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on and one year of experience, and/or an equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Experience in a field involving research and analy�cs. • Na�onal Crime Informa�on Center Cer�fica�on within six months. Must pass a criminal background check. Preferred Educa�on, Experience, Cer�fica�on/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on in Criminal Jus�ce, Law enforcement, or a related field. Understanding of records management systems and computer- aided dispatch. Experience with intelligence analysis and dissemina�on, sta�s�cal analysis, and geographic informa�on systems. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages. • Ability to complete a variety of writen reports, including inves�ga�ve reports, analy�cal charts, graphs, maps, and GIS. • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on and respond to ques�ons from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruc�ons in mathema�cal or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. • Ability to manage mul�ple priori�es and complete assignments within designated �me deadlines. • Ability to read and understand technical materials, reports, and journals. • Knowledge of computer so�ware and hardware systems • Basic understanding of SQL query language and database structure • Skills in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office-Word, Excel, Outlook, applicable Crime Analyst so�ware) • Ability to work collabora�vely with a diverse popula�on. • Ability to develop and maintain effec�ve working rela�onships. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
