IMPACT
Interviews conducted by a research team through the University of California-Santa
Barbara, under the guidance of Dr.Walid Afifi, allow us to measure the effects of
receiving beds, furniture, and other items from Houses into Homes. Results quantify the
impact on recipients and confirm that honoring their experiences and engaging them
with unconditional positive regard are paying dividends.
Highlights of the results include:
STRESS:86%of adult recipients reported that they experienced less stress since the
delivery
SLEEP:70%reported sleeping longer,and 84%reported sleeping better
HOME COMFORT:85%reported an increase in home comfort
WELCOME IN THE COMMUNITY:76%of surveyed recipients felt greater community
care
In an interview, one respondent said,“They just made me feel more like a worthwhile
person. It almost felt like it wasn't real.It blew me away,I didn't think that there was
someone real who could just give me furniture for free.I've been working on my
self-worth more, and it put some better perspective in me.”
Another respondent let us know that what they received was more than just furniture:
“They gave us the items that we needed to make it feel like home, not just another roof
over our heads. This doesn't feel like another place to live for my son,he considers this
home. This is the first time that he's been able to do that in nine years. They helped us
so much.”
One recipient told us,“The mutual positive regard that I experienced in the whole
process,to the beginning to the end,it was just, both times, very caring and
compassionate people that I communicated with. The furniture is just wonderful but
what was even more wonderful was the relationships that I had in the process of getting
everything I needed, just great furniture but even better people.”
