Position Title: Civil/Human Rights Engagement Specialist

Job Summary
Under general direction, coordinates marketing efforts for the Human Rights Office and Human
Rights Commission to strengthen community relationships and enhance engagement to achieve
strategic outreach initiatives that promote awareness and education on civil and human rights.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Leads the creation of visual content that communicates messages related to Title 2 of
the Iowa City Municipal Code, the mission and purpose of the office and Human Rights
Commission, and state and federal civil rights laws.
• Develops news releases, flyers, brochures, and other similar marketing materials that
articulate initiatives, events, or other matters for the office and the Human Rights
Commission. Manages website and social media content to inform the community about
rights, programs, and events, with the goal of enhancing the Office and Commission’s
online presence and improving public access to information, services, and opportunities.
• Attend monthly meetings of the Human Rights Commission (nights) to inform future
visual content creation and generate new ideas for engagement strategies and visual
storytelling, and to stay aligned with the Commission’s goals and messaging. Participate
in community activities (nights and weekends), events, and programs to make
connections and gather insight for future outreach projects.
• Identify opportunities for improved community engagement. Track and analyze outreach
over all platforms to provide insight on public perception and areas for improvement.
Assess the effectiveness of outreach efforts and adjust strategies based on feedback and
outcomes.
• Behaves in a way that promotes and supports a positive environment in the workplace
and community.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other

• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
• Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required. Must be 18
years of age. Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in
written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situations.
• Ability to plan and organize community events and programs.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Knowledge of local/municipal government structure.
• Knowledge of social justice principles and application.
• Skill in graphic design.
• Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office - Word,
Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite, WCAG 2 accessibility, writing and
editing skills, and Adobe Illustrator.
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Duties are generally performed in
an office setting with a controlled environment. The job requires sitting for extended periods of
time and the work may expose the employee to unpleasant social situations and significant
work pace pressure. Ability to travel in the community and attend evening and weekend
meetings.
