HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Center CoordinatorCITY OF IOWA CITY – Job Description Job Class #30-08 FLSA Exempt Non Civil Service Identification Position Title: Senior Center Coordinator Department: Senior Center Division: Senior Center Supervisor: City Manager or designee Job Summary Plans, coordinates and administers City programs for older adults, including management and support for conducting fundraising and stewardship activities. Job Scope Directly supervises small group of assigned employees, as well as hourly staff and students. Ultimately responsible for all non-compensated individuals performing volunteer duties in The Center’s programs. Provides visionary guidance and direction to assure programs and services meet the needs and interests of adults fifty years of age and beyond, living in the Iowa City/Johnson County area. Supports intergenerational programs and overall community involvement in The Center’s programs and services. Prepares and administers the annual budget. Diversifies and expands alternative funding sources such as grants and individual support to offset operating costs. Serves as liaison between The Center operations and the Friends of The Center Foundation. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Collaborates with a representative group of staff, participants, Senior Center Commission and advisory groups and community members to develop, articulate and promote a vibrant vision for The Center that establishes meaningful engagement and active support for older adults and generates enthusiasm for The Center within the community. Recruits, hires, supervises and evaluates staff. Plans staff training as needed. Coordinates/oversees the activities of individuals providing volunteer services to The Center’s programs. Participates in select Center programs and maintains day-to-day interactions with participants and visitors. Demonstrates and encourages exemplary customer service. Represents The Center and actively participates with community-based groups, committees and boards that focus on aging-related issues. Establishes networks among people, organizations and businesses that will support and further The Job Class #30-08 Senior Center Page 2 Updated 4/20/2018 Center’s mission. Serves as the City spokesperson in the community on aging and services. Management and allocation of space for internal and external users of The Center. Oversees rental usage agreements and tenant contracts. Responds to facility user requests and complaints. Provides staff support and technical assistance to the Senior Center Commission. Prepares, administers and monitors the department’s operational and capital budgets. Serves as Staff liaison to Friends of The Center’s Board of Directors; participates in developing and implementing all fundraising and management activities of the group; serves as Treasurer/Secretary of the Friends Board of Directors. Develops participant and community-based evaluation strategies to assess current programs and services for relevance, access, and cost, analyzes program results and implements changes. Encourages participant involvement in planning and delivery of programs and services. Establishes and maintains effective partnerships with other City departments and divisions; local businesses, organizations, hospitals and educational institutions to enrich programs and services. Manages the use and terms of independent contractor agreements. Reports to the City Council and Johnson County Board of Supervisors on operations, programming and proposed changes and requests. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs other related duties as assigned. Job Class #30-08 Senior Center Page 3 Updated 4/20/2018 Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social work, recreational services, gerontology, comparable field from an educational institution accredited by a DOE recognized accreditation body required. Three years’ experience in senior services and administration. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Master's degree or equivalent in gerontology or a Master’s degree in another area with a certificate in aging studies from an educational institution accredited by a DOE recognized accreditation body preferred. One-year experience in fundraising or equivalent preferred. Certification in CPR and the use of external automatic defibrillators preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the evolving needs and interests of aging residents; available community, state, and federal resources; and social issues and events affecting the wellbeing of the aging population. Knowledge of current and projected trends in aging and aging services. Knowledge and skill in fundraising. Skills in management, listening, negotiation, and oral and written communication. Ability to read and understand technical materials, reports and journals. Ability to develop and present mathematical budget information. Ability to coordinate effectively with employee groups, special interest groups, other agencies and city departments, and the general public.
