Property Description As described in the 2001 evaluation: The freestanding 2-story building was originally constructed as a 1-story filling station in ca. 1941 according to City Assessor Records and city directories. The concrete block building had two service bays on the east side with a plate glass display window on the west side. One pump island was located in the concrete paved parking area at the southwest corner of the property. Sometime after 1981 the building was altered with the addition of a mansard roofed second floor and cladding in brick on the first floor. The upper level now houses apartments and the first floor includes commercial spaces for retail or office tenants. Overall dimensions for the building are approximately 70’ x 30’. 2017 Update: A much-altered 1941 Kelly Oil Service Station was razed to accommodate the 2006 construction of a two-story, freestanding, brick clad building with an L-shaped footprint. The hipped roof is clad with standing- seam steel. Sited on a corner lot, the building has two primary elevations, south and west. The building’s first story houses a mailing service and the second story continues to serve as residential living. The main entrance to the first story is positioned on the west side of the building, S. Linn Street. The building is finished completely in brick and the second story contains balconies on both the south and west sides of the building. Image 01. View of the façade (south), looking north across E. Statement of Significance The non-extant service station building was an example of a late 20th century filling station design that had been modified for office space and apartment use. The Deep Rock Oil Company acquired this property in 1941 and operated a franchise filling station and auto garage here into the 1970s. The franchise operated under a number of names through the years including Kelly Oil Co. (1946), the Ray Floerchinger Gas Station (1950s), Larry’s Deep Rock Service Station #1 (1967), and the Knox Corporation Deep Rock Service Station #1 (1972). During the 1980s the building housed office space for Roggow & Associates Realtors and H& R Block (tax preparation service). In 2000 a portion of the building is vacant with Pakmail, a package and shipping service, in the other first floor space. Apartments are on the second floor. Figure 01.
