7. Property Description
The ca.1926 building on this site was razed in ca.2004 and replaced by a one-story brick commercial building (see
52-05435). The following (slightly edited) narrative from the 2001 survey relates to the non-extant building.
This 1-story concrete block building was constructed sometime between 1926 and 1933 when fire insurance maps
show it first appearing. Its small size relates to the earlier use of the site for a small blacksmith shop. Its front
façade has a height of just 11-ft. The current front façade has a single entrance door recessed on the right-hand
side and a single horizontal window on the east side. Wood cladding on the storefront consists of wide boards. A
decorative wood band sweeps the outer edges of the window and signboard area. #119 measures 15’ along the
front and has a depth of just 25-ft.
8. Statement of Significance
This building is located along Iowa Avenue near Old Capitol, a National Historic Landmark, and the Pentacrest, a
National Register historic district. As originally laid out, Block 80 of the Original Town Plat had lots in its
northeast quarter facing Iowa Avenue. This street was planned as wide boulevard leading from Capitol Square to
Governor’s Square on the west edge the town. Its 120-ft. width made Iowa Avenue the widest thoroughfare in the
Original Town Plat. With a city park located between Dubuque and Linn Streets and most of the city’s churches
located along and immediately north of Iowa Avenue, commercial establishments were not as well-favored here
as were public buildings.
Historical Background
As noted, an interpretation of fire insurance maps for 1926 and 1933 make it likely that this building was
constructed sometime between those years. Prior to that time the site held a 1-story frame building that served as a
blacksmith shop operated by Will and Ed Weber. In 1921 the Weber brothers sold the property to Cass Youde.
Youde bought the parcel immediately to the west the previous year. In 1935 the property was transferred to a
receiver and the following year Joesph and Harry Bremer, downtown property owners and operators of a men’s
clothing store, acquired the property. The property remains in the Bremer family in 2000.
Through the years this building has held a series of restaurants including a long-term Iowa City institution, the
Hamburg Inn (1930s-1940s). After it relocated in ca. 1978 several short term restaurants and cafes took advantage
of this sites proximity to the University of Iowa campus. In 2001 the building housed Easyplace Fast Food
restaurant.
