Linn Street Iowa City Address City 7. Narrative Description This two-story frame dwelling was constructed in ca.1888. The house is an example of the Front-Gabled Roof house form. It has a low-pitched front-gable roof with shallow eaves and no exposed cornice. A low-pitched hipped roof extends across the front. The porch has been enclosed with board and batten siding with paneled entrance doors at both sides and a pair of glass patio doors in the center. A concrete deck and steps spans the front. Windows are 1/1 double-hung sash. The building is clad in asbestos shingle siding. Other alterations include a large rear addition. The building is approximately 24-ft wide with 36-ft. depth (plus 8-ft. porch and 12- ft. rear addition). In 2017 the building appears unaltered from the previous survey. The building occupied by The Futon Shop. Image 01. View looking southwest across S. Linn Street (Image by AKAY Consulting, August 2017) 8. Statement of Significance This building is a poorly preserved example of a common vernacular house form – the Front-gabled Roof. Due to the building’s significant alterations it is not individually eligible for the National Register under Criteria A and C nor is it considered a contributing structure in a potential historic. Historical Background This house was likely built by Huldah Dunlap and her husband sometime after the couple acquired all of Lot 5 in 1871. They sold north and south sections of the parcel in 1881 and 1882 retaining this portion of the lot until 1889 Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs State Historical Society of Iowa Site Number 52-02231 Iowa Site Inventory Form Related District Number Continuation Sheet Page 2 Residence Johnson Name of Property County 224 S. Linn Street Iowa City Address City when they sold it to Mary R. Bailey. Baily and her descendents held the property until 1923 when it was sold to O.A. Byington. In 1938 a receiver transferred the property to Dr. Henry Urban and his wife, Dr. Grace Urban in 1939. It appears that the two doctors, both osteopaths, had their offices here. In 1955 the property was sold by L.E. Urban to the Leroy Weekes VFW Post 3949. Six years later in 1961 it was sold to Charles Leslie and Winona Ihring. They in turn sold the property to Robert Duane and Martha Huffman in 1981 who operated the Linn Street Antiques from the property. 9. Major Bibliographic References (2001) Iowa City city directories.
