Clinton Street Iowa City Address City 7. Narrative Description This 6-story brick building was under construction during 1999-2000 following a fire that destroyed the previous building on this site. The building has commercial space on the first floor and apartments on the upper levels. It is constructed of red brick with a cast stone foundation, beltcourse, and trim. Curved metal pieces are installed as fixed awnings and used to form vertical columns to subdivide the four bays into eight vertical columns of window openings. Brushed metal work is also used for window sash and cornice details. Metal “fins” project along the cornice giving the illusion of brackets. The south wall facing onto the alley has a five-story glass block window. A vaulted roof surmounts the top floor which is set back from the metal cornice edge. The first floor has four spans of tinted glass openings with the entrance to the upper level apartments in the north bay and the main entrance in the second bay from the south (Svendsen, 2001). In 2017, no significant alterations of the façade have been undertaken since the completion of the 2001 survey. Image 01. View of the façade (west), looking east across S. Statement of Significance This building is an example of an early 21st century building that was constructed after a fire destroyed the earlier mansard roofed commercial block. Because of its late date of construction, it is not individually eligible for the National Register under Criteria A or C nor is it a contributing structure to a potential historic district. This building was under construction in 1999 and placed in service in 2000 by local real estate developer Mark Moen. The building represents a shift in density, property type, and contemporary design style that typifies downtown construction trends of the early 21st century. 9.
