Clinton Street Iowa City Address City 7. Property Description This one-story brick commercial building was built in 1955 according to City Building Permits and substantially remodeled in 1995. The front portion of the building was an addition completed during the remodeling. This low-profile building has a concrete foundation with brick walls. A simple cornice finishes the upper edge of the wall. Large plate glass windows with transoms above span the entire building front. Fixed metal awnings are suspended by rods above each bay. The site slopes towards the alley with the recessed entrance opening at the far right side. The building is approximately 60-feet wide and 97-feet deep. The building remains today without significant alteration from the description above. The building is occupied by Hothouse Yoga. Image 01. View of the façade (west elevation), looking east across S. Clinton Street (Image by AKAY Consulting, August 2017) 8. Statement of Significance This building is an example of a mid-20th century infill building that replaced a building of similar scale. Because the façade, including an addition to the front of the building, was constructed in 1995, the building does not meet the standard for age and/or special significance to be considered for the National Register of Historic Places. Further, the building is not located within the boundaries of a potential historic district, so bears no status in that regard. Historical Background Located on the fringe of the downtown, this site has had a variety of uses through the years. In the 1890s the site held Dr. C.H. Hobby’s private hospital in a 3-story building. Sanborn maps for 1906 and 1912 show the rear portion of this building razed and the front section was being used as The Republican newspaper’s print shop and editorial offices. By 1920 the site the site was vacant and six years later a small filling station operated by the Western Oil Co. had been constructed on the site. This business continued into the 1930s with a garage built onto the rear and sides of the original station. In 1946 the property was sold to William and Nora Novotny and the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs State Historical Society of Iowa Site Number 52-4070 Iowa Site Inventory Form Related District Number Continuation Sheet Page 2 Commercial Building Johnson Name of Property County 224 S. Clinton Street Iowa City Address City Novotny bicycle shop opened from the space a short time later. City directories indicate that both William and Leland repaired bicycles from this location with the business eventually known as Novotny Cycle Center. The building was remodeled in 1995 when the Bread Garden Bakery and Café located in the expanded building on the site (Svendsen, 2001). 9.
